REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION
Agenda Item: 7C1
ACTION:  Adopt a resolution declaring the canvass of results for the March 10, 2026, City of Tempe 
Primary Election. (Resolution No. R2026.30)
FISCAL IMPACT:  None.
RECOMMENDATION:  Adopt Resolution No. R2026.30.
 
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:  On Tuesday, March 10, 2026, the City of Tempe held a Primary 
Election for the purpose of nominating and/or electing candidates for three City Council seats.
The results of the election are contained in the official canvass to be adopted by resolution. Arizona 
Revised Statutes (A.R.S.) §16-642 requires the City Council to meet and canvass the election results 
not less than six days nor more than twenty days following the election. A.R.S. §16-646 requires the 
official canvass to contain certain information, which is included in the attached resolution:
1) the overall citywide voter turnout;
2) the number of ballots cast in each precinct and in the city;
3) the number of ballots rejected in each precinct and in the city;
4) the titles of the offices voted for, and the names of each person voted for to fill the offices; and
5) the number of votes by precincts and city received by each candidate and the overall percentage 
of votes received by each candidate.
One candidate, Arlene Chin, received more votes than the majority vote calculation and will be declared 
re-elected to office, effective as of the May 19, 2026, General (Runoff) Election. Two City Council seats 
remain to be filled. The four candidates who received the next highest number of votes, Jennifer Adams, 
Berdetta Hodge, Bobby Nichols, and Brooke St. George, will advance to the May 19, 2026, General 
(Runoff) Election ballot.
The certified permanent copy of the official canvass for all offices in the City Election is filed with the City 
Clerk to maintain and preserve it as a permanent public record.
