CITY OF TEMPE
Meeting Date: 03/26/2026
REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION
Agenda Item: 8A4
ACTION: Approve the utilization of a one-year Sourcewell cooperative contract with Daktronics, Inc.
for the purchase and installation of a new digital display scoreboard for Tempe Diablo Stadium.
FISCAL IMPACT: The total cost of the contract will not exceed $1,100,000. Sufficient funds have
been appropriated in Park Improvement/Recreation Capital Improvement Program (CIP), Project
6309769 (Implemented Diablo Stadium Master Plan), for anticipated expenditures during the current
fiscal year and next fiscal year, contingent upon City Council approval of the City’s annual budget.
RECOMMENDATION: Approve the utilization of the contract.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION: (030223) Sourcewell solicited and awarded a contract to provide
for the purchase and installation of digital display scoreboards. Sourcewell develops public procurement
solicitations and agreements using a lead state model, which meets the City’s highest standard for public
cooperative contracting, achieving effective and efficient acquisition of quality products and services.
The existing scoreboard and message board at Tempe Diablo Stadium is a Daktronics system installed
in 2009. The system has begun to experience operational issues due to its age. The model is no longer
in production, and in recent years, Daktronics has relied on refurbished components to maintain
functionality. While these efforts have allowed the City to continue operating the board, the availability
of replacement parts is increasingly limited.
Tempe Diablo Stadium is currently the only Cactus League facility without full video display capabilities.
Upgrading the scoreboard will align the stadium with the technological standards of the other nine
Cactus League stadiums, the majority of which utilize Daktronics systems.
The existing scoreboard has served the City well, and Daktronics has consistently provided strong
customer support, ensuring the system remains operational for games and special events. Additionally,
the Los Angeles Angels’ home stadium in Anaheim, California utilizes Daktronics displays. As a result,
digital content provided by the Angels is fully compatible with the current system at Tempe Diablo
Stadium, allowing for seamless integration and operational efficiency. Furthermore, Daktronics
maintains a strong service presence in the Cactus League and offers a fully integrated hardware and
proprietary software platform, which streamlines operations and improves system reliability compared
to systems that rely on third-party party software providers.
General Pricing for Contract
Sourcewell offers all participating agencies a minimum of 10% off list price through competitively
awarded cooperative contracts. Staff negotiated additional savings, resulting in a further reduction of
$22,132.54.

Stadium.

If approved as recommended, Daktronics will install the new scoreboard during the summer of 2026.
