OVERVIEW:  
This agenda item consists of a joint meeting of the Tempe Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) and 
the Tempe Historic Preservation Foundation (THPF), a private nonprofit organization. The agenda for 
the joint meeting is as follows:
1) Discussion of the HPC’s purpose and duties.
The Historic Preservation Officer will briefly explain the purposes and duties of the Historic Preservation 
Commission, as described in Tempe City Code, Chapter 14A (Historic Preservation Ordinance), with 
additional comments by the Chair and other HPC members if they choose.
2) Discussion of the THPF’s goals and recent and current projects
Members of the THPF will discuss its goals and projects like the recent relocation and preservation of 
two Camp Papago buildings dating to World War II.

3) Discussion of strategies to encourage owners of Historic-Eligible properties to designate their 
properties in the Tempe Historic Property Register.
Per City Code Chapter 14A-3(k)(8), one of the HPC's duties and activities is "developing and 
participating in public information activities in order to increase public awareness of the value of historic 
preservation, and performing other functions that will encourage or further historic preservation." The 
THPF shares the HPC's interest in encouraging property owners, particularly those with Historic-Eligible 
properties, to agree to have their properties designated in the Tempe Historic Property Register.
4) Discussion of how to engage and educate the public in historic preservation efforts.
The Commission and the Foundation will discuss strategies to promote historic preservation in Tempe.
5) Discussion of Downtown Historic Core Plan draft guidelines.
The HPC and THPF will discuss and provide feedback on the Downtown Historic Core Plan draft 
guidelines.
