Mayor's Youth Advisory Commission Update and 
Recommendations Presentation
AGENDA ITEM: 4A 
PURPOSE:
The purpose of the May 18, 2026, presentation is to present the recommendations from Tempe Youth 
Talks and provide an update on the accomplishments of the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Commission 
(MYAC). MYAC Members and Tempe staff will be present to address the Council and respond to any 
questions.
RECOMMENDATION OR GUIDANCE REQUESTED:
MYAC recommendations for action are presented to the Mayor and Tempe City Council for review and 
possible action.
CITY COUNCIL STRATEGIC PRIORITY AND RELATED PERFORMANCE MEASURE:
The Mayor’s Youth Advisory Commission and subcommittees support City Council Priority Quality of Life 
and Performance Measure and 3.34, and City Council Priority Sustainable Growth and Development and 
Performance Measure 4.18 and City Council Priority Safe and Secure Communities and Performance 
Measures 1.05 and 1.07.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
As Council is aware, the Mayor's Youth Advisory Commission (MYAC) was established in 1980 in 
response to the problems youth often face. At that time, it was recognized that youth had no voice in local 
government and were not included as part of the solution. Tempe recognized the importance of youth 
input and created an advisory commission.  
This year, MYAC engaged with youth in a variety of ways to better understand perspectives. This included 
hosting a youth resource fair at the annual Regional Unity Walk on January 25, 2026, where surveys 
were administered to obtain youth input. Following this event, MYAC commissioners shared student 
surveys on high school campuses to obtain more feedback. Additionally, MYAC hosted its third Tempe 
Youth Talks which provided an opportunity for youth to engage with city leaders, school staff and students 
to provide direct input.
This year, MYAC focused on the following topics: Mental Health and Environmental Sustainability & 
Justice, Community Safety, and Civic Engagement & Social Justice. Recommendations from youth 
feedback will be published in the MYAC’s 2026 Annual Report. In addition to sharing the report with the 
Mayor and City Council, the action plan will be shared with the Tempe Union High School District 
Governing Board and will be widely disseminated in the community.
FISCAL IMPACT or IMPACT TO CURRENT RESOURCES:
No fiscal impact or impact to current resources.
