REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION

ACTION:  Adopt a resolution authorizing the City Manager or designee(s), to execute an amendment 
to the agreement between the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office and the City of Tempe to participate in 
the Detention Officer Training Academy. (Resolution No. R2026.64)
FISCAL IMPACT:  Sufficient funds have been appropriated in General Fund – cost center 2253 
(Detention) for any anticipated expenditures in fiscal year 2026-27. This agreement will continue through 
fiscal year 2027-28.
RECOMMENDATION:  Adopt Resolution No. R2026.64.
 
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:  The Tempe Police Department currently utilizes the Training 
Academy at the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office for the formal training of detention recruits. The 
Training Academy holds regularly scheduled training programs and offers open slots to Tempe detention 
recruits as available. This agreement will allow the Tempe Police Department to hire detention officers 
to maintain staffing levels.
