CALL TO ORDER / ROLL CALL Commission Chair Jacob Bello called the meeting to order at 6:07 p.m. Commissioners present: Jacob Bello, Tyler Conaway, John Anguiano, Joseph Curbelo, Ozetta Kirby and Erica Maxwell Commissioners absent: Shahzad Amjad, Shannon Begay, Trini Decker and Garry Ong Staff present: Niki Tapia, Rori Minor and Travis Feyen Public present: Eduarda Schroder, Tempest Shires and Pamela Morris 2. APPROVAL OF MINUTES a. Wednesday, April 21, 2021 a. Ozetta Kirby moved to approve the April 21, 2021 Human Relation Commission Meeting Minutes. Tyler Conaway seconded, and the motion passed unanimously. 3. SCHEDULED/UNSCHEDULED PUBLIC APPEARANCES/CALL TO PUBLIC 4. ACTION AGENDA a. Chair and Vice Chair Elections a. Jacob Bello nominated Tyler Conaway to be chair. Bello moved to elect Tyler Conaway at Chair. The motion was seconded by Ozetta Kirby and it was approved unanimously. b. Tyler Conaway nominated Jacob Bello to be Vice Chair. Tyler Conaway moved to elect Jacob Bello as Vice Chair. The motion was seconded by Joseph Curbelo and it was approved unanimously. b. HRC Participation at C4C Juneteenth Celebration a. Niki Tapia and Rori Minor provided information on the Juneteenth Celebration. Ozetta Kirby moved for the Human Relations Commission to have a booth at the event. Jacob Bello seconded the motion, and it was approved unanimously 5. BRIEFING ITEMS a. Antidiscrimination Update a. The city plans to refer this topic to the Human Relations Commission for review and community input. b. Diversity and Inclusion Consultant Update a. Niki Tapia shared that $50,000 has been allocated for a diversity consultant. c. Police Updates a. Commander Feyen provided an update on the Burt Colucci case to provide clarity about rumors that the defendant’s charges were dropped. Commander Feyen let the group know that he was charged with aggravated assault, and it now sits with the County Attorney who posted a $75,000 bail. d. Diversity Office Update a. Niki Tapia shared a letter from the Mayor with all the commissioners. b. Niki Tapia shared an update on the Diversity Office’s budget for Fiscal Year 2021-22. c. Ozetta Kirby requested an update on the Chandler Unified School District’s Diversity efforts. Niki Tapia shared information on the CUSD Equity Conference. Tyler Conaway suggested inviting Dr. Saluu to the August 18, 2021 Human Relations Commission meeting. 6. MEMBERS COMMENTS/ANNOUNCEMENTS Ozetta Kirby shared her desire for the Human Relations Commission to support an event to honor Martin Luther King Jr. Joseph Curbello shared his concern about Mental Health in the community in relation to multiple student suicides. Tyler Conaway suggested a review of suicide awareness training materials to evaluate the cultural competence. 7. CALENDAR a. Chandler4Change Juneteenth Freedom Festival, Saturday, June 19, 5 to 9 pm. @ Folley Park c. Operation Back to School, Saturday, July 17, 8 to 10 a.m. d.
