CALL TO ORDER / ROLL CALL Commission Vice Chair Jacob Bello called the meeting to order at 6:03 p.m. Commissioners present: Jacob Bello, Joseph Curbelo, Pam Morris, Shahzad Amjad, Shannon Begay and Garry Ong Commissioners absent: Tyler Conaway, John Anguiano, Ozetta Kirby, Erica Maxwell, and Trini Decker Staff present: Niki Tapia, Rori Minor, Cisco Luzania and Travis Feyen Public present: None 2. SCHEDULED/UNSCHEDULED PUBLIC APPEARANCES/CALL TO PUBLIC None 3. CONSENT AGENDA 1. Approval of Minutes a. Garry Ong moved to approve the May 18, 2021 Human Relation Commission Meeting Minutes. Joseph Curbelo seconded, and the motion passed unanimously. 4. DISCUSSION 1. Diversity and Inclusion Consultant a. Niki Tapia provided background on the Diversity and Inclusion Consultant that the City Council allocated $50,000 for this purpose. She shared that Neighborhood Resources Director met with the City Manager to continue discussions. 5. BRIEFING 1. Briefing on Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Division a. The City has changed the name of the Diversity Office to the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Division. The priorities of this division are events, education, advocacy, and collaboration. 2. Briefing DEI Fall Event Schedule a. A calendar now exists on chandleraz.gov/diversityevents for the public to view upcoming events. b. Cisco Luzania provided information on upcoming Chandler Contigo Events and other fall events. 3. Briefing from Chandler Police Department a. Commander Feyen let the commission know that the crime report numbers are back for the first 6-month period of 2021. Violent crimes have dropped since 2020 so far. A special taskforce was created to address gun violence. 6. MEMBER COMMENTS/ANNOUNCEMENTS Garry Ong shared his thoughts on diversity even within the Asian community. He proposed a Town Hall meeting to specifically engage subgroups of the Asian community so the City of Chandler can understand how to better serve this segment of the community. Pam Morris mentioned that the Jewish Community Center is looking for diverse candidates to help with the Early Education Program. 7. CALENDAR 1. HRC Regular Meeting, Wednesday, October 20, 6 p.m. 8.
