MINUTES HUMAN RELATIONS COMMISSION Webex: https://bit.ly/3lIr9IV +1-415-655-0001 US Toll | Access code: 2598 318 7777 Password: m4YpKZqPD28 Wednesday, October 20, 2021, at 6:00 p.m. CALL TO ORDER / ROLL CALL Commission Chair Tyler Conaway called the meeting to order at 6:01 p.m. Commissioners present: Jacob Bello, Joseph Curbelo, Shahzad Amjad, Shannon Begay, Garry Ong, Tyler Conaway, John Anguiano, Ozetta Kirby, Erica Maxwell Commissioners absent: Gina Hill, Pam Morris Staff present: Niki Tapia, Rori Minor, Cisco Luzania, Breena Meng and Travis Feyen Public present: Eduarda Schroder SCHEDULED/UNSCHEDULED PUBLIC APPEARANCES/CALL TO PUBLIC None CONSENT AGENDA 1. Approval of Minutes a. John Anguiano moved to approve the August 18, 2021 Human Relation Commission Meeting Minutes. Ozetta Kirby seconded, and the motion passed unanimously. ACTION AGENDA 2. HRC Subcommittee for Ongoing Updates on Diversity Consultant Process a. Gary Ong, Jacob Bello, Tyler Conaway, and Joseph Curbelo volunteered to serve on the Human Relation Commission subcommittee. Tyler moved to approve Gary Ong seconded, and the motion passed unanimously. 3. HRC to host Holiday Reception for Chandler Diversity Partners a. Cisco Luzania shared information about this event. The date is set for December 10, 2021 at the Chandler Museum. Chair Tyler appointed Gina Hill to the planning committee. Ozetta Kirby and Tyler Conaway volunteered to serve on the committee. Tyler Conaway moved for the Human Relation Commission to host a Holiday Reception in December 2021. Joseph Curbelo seconded, and the motion passed unanimously. 4. HRC Participation in Regional Unity Campaign a. Niki Tapia provided information on the proposed Regional Unity Campaign b. Tyler Conaway moved for the Human Relation Commission to participate in the Regional Unity Campaign in January 2022. Erica Maxwell seconded, and the motion passed unanimously. 5. HRC to Host Asian Town Hall Event a. Gary Ong provided information on the Asian Town Hall. The date proposed is May 7, 2022 to align with Asian American and Pacific Islander Month. Gary Ong, Tyler Conaway, and Joseph Curbelo volunteered to serve on the steering committee. Tyler Conaway moved for the Human Relation Commission to host an Asian Town Hall in May 2022. Ozetta Kirby seconded, and the motion passed unanimously. DISCUSSION 6. Census 2020 Report b. Cisco Luzania provided stats from the 2020 Census results. BRIEFING 7. Multicultural Festival a. Rori Minor shared that the Multicultural Festival will be on January 15, 2022 at Dr. AJ Chandler Park. Tyler Conaway asked to continue discussion on highlighting Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during the event. 8. Briefing from Chandler Police Department c. Commander Feyen shared that the Police Department participated in the annual G.A.I.N events. Upcoming on October 23rd the Department will be volunteering with For Our City Day. d. John Anguiano asked about construction of a Casino on Gilbert and Hunt Highway. Commander Feyen let the commission know that the planning period was short for this ground breaking. The Police Department has taken a look at the plans and the Casino will be fully contained on Reservation land. The City will look over traffic issues that may arise. MEMBER COMMENTS/ANNOUNCEMENTS Erica Maxwell asked about a Regional HRC meeting. Niki Tapia let the commission know that the other city liaisons have said they are not having in person meetings at this time. CALENDAR 1. Nov 13 – Chandler Pride LGBTQ+ Picnic in the Park @ Arrowhead Park *4:30–7:30 p.m* 6. Dec 8 – HRC Meeting *6–7 p.m.* 7. Dec 10 – HRC/DNG Holiday Reception @ Chandler Museum *7–9 p.m.* INFORMATION ITEMS AJOURN Gary Ong moved to adjourn the Human Relation Commission meeting. Ozetta Kirby seconded, and the motion passed unanimously.
