To the Finalists Review Committee:
Thank you for the opportunity to present designs for the Chandler Police Memorial. With law enforcement and other
civil servants in my own family, I know that each department carries within it its own nuanced sense of community,
honor, pride and reverence for the duty of service, and as such, the insights provided by Chief Duggan and Assistant
Chief Ramer proved invaluable across all design decisions.
I have designed two distinct presentations of this memorial: one designed around the aesthetics of strength, unity, and
simplicity for the reception area; and one using color and material to bring specificity and individuality to the officers
being memorialized. Both compositions will be made using a variety of processes and surfacing techniques, and will rely
heavily on the intrinsic prosperities of the materials to invoke the desired emotions and tonality.
For the lobby wall, I'd like to place emphasis on the whole department, paying homage to the organization and the
teamwork associated with a life of service. To do this while memorializing each individual officer, I'm proposing a line of
plaques to be mounted horizontally under the inscription, "Chandler Police: In Memoriam." The lettering is to be
laser-cut stainless steel, set off the wall using standoffs. Hanging this composition higher on the wall, the center of the
plaques being centered on a 70" horizontal line, will increase the magnitude of its simplicity and strength.
For the community room wall, color will play a large role. The use of color photographs and badge will literally,
figuratively, and aesthetically add texture, color, and variety to each plaque. These plaques will be circumscribed around
a large rendition of the Chandler Police emblem. This centerpiece will be a layered composition made out of a variety of
laser cut metals—steel, bronze, brass, and copper. To give depth to the work, each layer will be offset from each other
using standoffs (about 3" deep). This layered technique will lend a majestic nature to the sunstreaks emanating from the
star. I am proposing to use a magnesium etching for the centrally located state seal, as well as the lettering for the in-
scriptions, blending traditional aesthetics with contemporary processes.
Both compositions maintain an individual plaque for each officer. I've consulted with plaque-making specialists to ensure
that these designs can be made and that they can be replicated as the need arises. All parts, individually and collectively,
are also selected for longevity, durability and ease of care and maintenance.
Articulating the vision of the Chandler Police community in a sculptural aesthetic that is reverential and enduring will
provide an iconic visual statement of honor, memoriam, and community connection. Thank you for your time and

18’ x 18’ x 4’ — Powder-coated Steel, Polyurethane Panels. A prime example of placemaking: through a charette
process, students decided on a spiral agave as the design concept for this permanent architecturally-integrated
amenity. Then, working with architect Doug Brown, I designed and manufactured this object specifically for the
Phoenix Country Day School.
5 - 7 | Tempe Streetcar | VALLEY METRO (AZ) | Spring 2020 | $157,000 USD
Expected to open in 2021, the Tempe Streetcar is a highly-anticipated lightrail expansion project in Tempe, AZ. I
was selected to design, fabricate, and install sculptures at three stops along Apache Blvd.
Sign Remix — 20' x 9' x 5', Steel, Automotive Paint, NeonFlex Lighting. Apache Boulevard, with its rich history of
iconic signage, has remained a bellwether landscape for the continuous flux between university and city
architecture, campus and urban life. In honor of this tradition, I’ve designed Sign Remix, blending historical signage
with contemporary materials.
Superbloom — 16' x 2' x 2' ea., Steel, Automotive Paint, Polyurethane Panel, LED Lighting. This installation at
Paseo Del Saber features 10 custom luminaries mounted to 5 antique lightposts. Nestled within university
architecture similarly named for desert botanicals, this artwork is a colorful abstraction of the valley's famous
wildflower superblooms.
Antonym for a Tchotchke — 20' x 6' x 2', Steel and Automotive Paint. Abstracted air handlers on high perches
overlook the streetcar stop at Dorsey Rd.. The contemporary presentation of seemingly arcane items remind
viewers that Tempe is not only built around the industry of the college, but also thrives due to its other histories of
manufacturing and industry.

50' Diameter (variable) — Steel, Wood, Upholstery Fabric. Named after a desert level in Super Mario Brothers, this
50' game of "Can't Touch the Ground" is designed as small platforms with hemispherical foundations. These
"islands" constantly change the center of gravity— keeping participants on their toes at the Scottsdale Arts Festival.

BIO
Bobby Zokaites is a U.S. based sculptor skilled in a variety of materials with a wealth of experience producing
large scale works for private and public spaces. His industrious work ethic and urban design sense enable him
to create distinctive works of art that foster new and dynamic relationships between community, site, history
and the natural environment. Blurring the line between fine art, public sculpture, and collaborative practices,
his work engages diverse audiences, humanizes public spaces, and often encourages participation with larger-
than-life-sized artwork. Zokaites earned his BFA at New York College of Ceramics at Alfred University (2008)
and his MFA in Sculpture at Arizona State University (2014). He recently completed two permanent municipal
infrastructure projects in Arizona. It is integral to Zokaites' practice that his work connects residents to one
another and their community in new ways, creating new and lasting experiences.
