MINUTES OF THE CHANDLER ARTS COMMISSION MEETING TUESDAY, March 15, 2022 5:00 PM Commissioners Present: Kathleen Escobedo, Michelle Hirsch, Tim Wiant, José Benavides, Shachi Kale Commissioners absent: Farhana Ahmed, Julie Ray Staff Present: Peter Bugg, Caroline Hudson-Naef CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was called to order at 5:01 PM by Michelle Hirsch UNSCHEDULED / SCHEDULED PUBLIC APPEARANCES / CALL TO PUBLIC - None APPROVAL OF MINUTES FROM THE FEBRUARY 15 MEETING: a) Tim made a motion to approve the minutes as written. Kathleen seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. ACTION AGENDA a) The commissioners discussed who would represent the Arts Commission as a juror for the CUSD exhibition along with Jillian Nakornthap and Miguel Godoy. Kathleen and José volunteered. Tim made a motion to approve Kathleen and José as jurors for the CUSD show. Michelle seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. b) Discussion of the Arts Commission representatives for the Fire Department memorial design proposal review. Kathleen and Shachi volunteered. José made a motion to approve Kathleen and Shachi as representatives for the Fire Department proposal review meeting. Tim seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. c) Peter reviewed information about purchasing the Roommates sculpture by Nicholas Rascona. The commissioners had some questions about pricing and longevity, which Peter answered. Tim made a motion to approve the purchase of the sculpture. Kathleen seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. d) Peter shared again the Request for Qualifications for the Zora Folley mural project. Michelle made an edit to the tense of the Bigger than Boxing exhibition, which has now passed. Kathleen asked if the Folley family had been contacted about this project, and Peter shared that they approved of the project. Kathleen made a motion to approve the RFQ as amended. Jose seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. BRIEFING ITEMS a) Ongoing public art projects a. Peter shared that the NHSP paperwork has been approved. He needs to check some details internally with the city, but otherwise hopes to release the Zora Folley Mural RFQ this week. b. Peter shared some updates on the Police memorial project. He is working with the Police Department on the correct badge design to be used and Nicholas Rascona’s paperwork. c. Peter has met with Chief Hargis and the four Fire Department project finalists who saw the location and blueprints of the fire station being renovated, as well as discussed the desired themes for the artwork. d. Peter shared revised locations and new verbiage from Lily Reeves, the INFLUX artist. The commissioners discussed the locations as well as the text and had suggestions that staff will take into consideration and pass on to Lily. b) Maintenance Projects a. Peter is working to get some vandalism on a sculpture on Arizona Ave by the Frye Rd Circle K fixed. b. The Arizona Ave/ Chandler Boulevard bus stations are public artwork and have lights that aren’t working. Peter put in a work request for the them to be fixed. c) Discuss portable works purchase options a. Peter shared how in the past some funds from CAC have been used to purchase Portable Public Works, or artworks in a permanent collection that are displayed in buildings around the city. He suggested to the commissioners that this could be a good way to use funds and support artists. He made some suggestions of recently exhibited artists, and the commissioners had some questions and comments about who would be chosen and how. José recommended selecting someone who hasn’t already been funded by the commission, and Kathleen suggested selecting artists who have applied for previous projects but didn’t get selected. Peter will prepare a list of artists for consideration at the April meeting. d) Discuss public art component for Spring 2023 exhibitions a. Peter shared information about artist Jacob Meders, an indigenous artist, creating artwork using the John Clymer prints the Arts Commission deaccessioned. Meders’ work will be exhibited at Vision Gallery in early 2023, and Daniel Nez, another native artist, will be on display at the Chandler Center for the Arts at the same time. Peter proposed that there be a permanent public art project completed by a native artist also to be released at that time, and suggested artist Gerald Clarke. José suggested that local artist Randy Kemp also be considered. Peter stated that another artist could be selected, but thinks Gerald is a good option due to his proven experience with public art. MEMBERS COMMENTS/ANNOUNCEMENTS - Shachi has a two-person show opening at the MCC gallery next week, which will be on display for a month. - Michelle attended an event at Baseline Flowers last week celebrating another of Ariana Enriquez’s murals. - José participated in the ArtLink Gala last week and will be in an exhibition in January. He also just purchased two tickets to Burning Man. - Kathleen has been busy with commissioned work. She is in her last three months as an artist with the Mesa Arts Center co-op and is considering what she wants to do next. - Tim has now visited all three Meow Wolf locations and says that either Denver or Santa Fe would be his favorite. Tim also asked where the library mural project will fall in the schedule, and Peter shared that May is possible for the RFQ. - Peter shared information about gifts for the commissioners from the city for 2021 and 2020, as well as the shift to e-Agenda.
