Native American History, specifically the Gila River Indian Community.

Narrative
Please structure your proposal to provide the following information in the order indicated. Provide the narrative in
paragraph form in the text field provided. Please be thorough but strive for brevity.
1. Briefly describe your organization’s history, mission and goals.
The mission of Seton Catholic Preparatory is to provide a college preparatory curriculum within a Catholic
faith community focusing on academic excellence, leadership, and loving service to others.
Founded in 1954 to serve the children of migrant farmers, Seton Catholic has a strong history of providing a
welcoming community for all students who desire a strong academic experience in a faith filled environment.
Under the direction of Principal Victor Serna, Seton has embarked on a 10-year effort to stay true to its
mission; Seton will enhance its ability to serve all learners, ensure access to all students regardless of
financial means, improve facilities, grow enrollment, and ensure institutional vitality and sustainability.

municipality’s role in this project. If the applying organization is a municipality or a municipal sub-division please

Seton Catholic is non-profit organization that has a strong relationship with the city of Chandler, the business
community, and the Chandler Chamber of Commerce. Seton uses city facilities for school programs and
works with community groups to host events on the school’s campus.
3. Describe the proposed project, objectives, and your plan to implement.
Over the last 2 years, Seton has invested $2.7M in capital improvements to renovate the buildings on its
Historic Campus. The library was built in the 1980s and has not received much improvement since then. This
renovation project will bring the facility up to current standards to meet the needs of today’s students.
Additionally, the space will be more conducive for meetings, parent gatherings, and donor events. As a way
to honor the native people to Chandler, Arizona, Seton aspires to create the Gila River Indian Community
Native American Study Room in the library to promote the study of the Gila River Indian Community history,
as well as other Native American communities in Arizona. This space will feature resource books, art, and
artifacts that celebrate the history and culture of the Gila River Indian Community.

4. Describe how the proposed project satisfies one or more of the priority funding areas identified by the Gila River
Indian Community.
One of the Gila River Indian Community focus areas is education. The renovation of our library will ensure
that students have the research tools necessary to complete their education and develop skills that will
prepare them for post-secondary education. The library will also include individual and small group spaces
for test taking, tutoring, and group projects. A goal of the Administration is to create a space dedicated to the
history and culture of the Gila River Indian Community and the larger Native American community so that all
students can learn more about the Community’s heritage, including the growing number of Native American
students at Seton. Seton’s library and study room will promote life-long learning for students and the
renovated space will provide this service for generations to come.
5. Identify the needs/problems to be addressed, target population and number of people to be served by the
project.
The library is static and does not have the flexibility and technology that is needed to meet the expectations
and needs of today’s students. Seton’s entire student body of 560 students will benefit from this space. As
enrollment grows, it will be sufficient to serve higher numbers of students. Seton also uses the library for
financial aid information sessions and workshops for parents and the renovation and technology will better
facilitate those meetings. Parent groups need a place to meet; the library is a perfect spot for these
meetings. Similarly, Seton regularly hosts small donor gatherings; this space’s flexibility will serve both formal
and informal gatherings.
Seton Catholic is looking to provide space that honors the Native people of the Chandler area. Seton plans to
create a study room that is dedicated to educational materials for student and staff use, and that celebrates
the reach culture by displaying art and artifacts from the Gila River Indian Community.
6. Define the project as a new or continuing program. Has GRIC previously funded this project?
This is a new, one-time project. GRIC has not previously funded this project.

7. Provide a brief timeline including start and finish dates. Indicate if the timeline is flexible.
The project will begin in the summer of 2022 and progress throughout the 2022-2023 school year and
conclude by June 2023. The project is not flexible because it is difficult to completely shut down the library
building for a period of time beyond one academic year. The school will manage the disruption to student life
by working with the general contractor to complete phases of the project and make parts of the building
accessible for student use. life and operations.
8. Identify other organizations, partners or funders participating in the project and their roles.
Seton Catholic has a donor base that is primed for supporting our campus improvements. In the summer of
2021, Seton completed over $2.7 million worth of campus renovations and all funds were raised to complete
these projects. Seton has two fundraisers planned this spring and summer to raise the funds necessary to pay
for the school’s portion of the project. The principal architect of HDA Architects is a past Seton parent and he is
providing guidance on the project. Pimmex General Contracting is locally owned and operated by Carlos Muñoz
and will serve as the general contractor for this project.
9. Would you be able to implement the proposed plan if your organization received partial funding for this project?
This project is predicated on funds secured from a variety of sources. If this grant is partially funded, Seton
will seek additional funds from other donors.
10. Describe your plan for project financial sustainability beyond the grant period. If this is a program/project
previously funded by the Gila River Indian Community describe efforts made towards the previously described
sustainability plan.
This project is a one-time effort that will have a 20+ year life cycle. Seton Catholic includes ongoing
maintenance and capital improvements in its annual budget. This project is not related to any project
previously funded by the Gila River Indian Community.

11. Describe your plan to document progress and results.
A Seton Board Member is a retired developer who will provide oversight to ensure project moves efficiently
from start to completion. Seton Catholic will track all progress and expenses using its current systems.
Progress will be communicated regularly to the community in the school’s e-newsletter and in the school’s
social media channels. Financial expenditures will be logged using the school’s accounting practices and
procedures. Seton Catholic’s financial statements are audited yearly, and audit reports can be provided upon
request.

Project Budget Detail

1. This item covers the costs of the schematic design, design development, construction documents, and the
construction administration by our architect, HDA Architects.
2. Pimmex General Contracting will serve as the general contractor for this project. The costs include the demolition and
removal of the current library interior and a full renovation of the interior of the building.
3. The costs include new furniture for the library, the Gila River Indian Community Native American Study Room, and the
offices in the building.
4. This line item includes costs for the resources used to complete the educational and research purpose of the Gila
River Indian Community Native American Study Room in the library.
