   CHANDLER MUSEUM FOUNDATION BOARD 
CHANDLER MUSEUM, SAGUARO ROOM, 300 S. CHANDLER VILLAGE DRIVE,      
CHANDLER, AZ, OR VIRTUALLY VIA WEBEX

PRESENT: Barbara Meyerson, Calvenea Malloy, Jacki Ryan, Joan Clark, Joshua Askey, 
Maris Thomas, Martin Sepulveda, Michelle Reid, and Tom Escobedo 
 
ABSENT: Brenda Abney 
 
STAFF: Anna Camino, Jody Crago, and Michelle Mac Lennan 
 
GUESTS: None. 
 
CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was called to order at 5:30 p.m. by Barbara Meyerson 
at the Chandler Museum, Saguaro Room, 300 S. Chandler Village Drive in Chandler, 
AZ, and virtually via WebEx, Phone #1-602-666-0783, Meeting #2593 720 5315. 
 
SCHEDULE/UNSCHEDULED PUBLIC APPEARANCES/CALL TO THE PUBLIC: None.  
 
On behalf of the Chandler Museum Foundation Board, Barbara Meyerson thanked 
Tom Escobedo for his guidance and leadership as the Board Chair for the past two 
years. Tom was the first Chair of the recently formed Museum Foundation Board. 
 
Barbara Meyerson then turned the meeting over to Maris Thomas, who presented 
Tom Escobedo with several tokens of appreciation from the board.  
 
Tom Escobedo thanked the board members and shared it is now time for the new 
Executive Subcommittee Members to bring the Museum Foundation Board to the 
next level.

CONSENT AGENDA 
a. Approve meeting minutes of June 20, 2022 
• Joan Clark made a motion to approve the meeting minutes from June 
20, 2022. 
• Calvenea Malloy seconded the motion. The motion was unanimously 
approved. The minutes were approved with one correction.  
 
ACTION AGENDA 
a. Approve 2023 Museum Foundation Board Meeting Dates 
• Joan Clark made the motion to approve the 2023 Museum Foundation 
Board Dates.  
• Calvenea Malloy seconded the motion. The motion was unanimously 
approved.  
 
b. Approve 2023 Museum Foundation Executive Subcommittee Dates 
• Maris Thomas made a motion to approve the 2023 Museum Foundation 
Executive Subcommittee Dates.  
• Calvenea Malloy seconded the motion. The motion was unanimously 
approved.  
 
c. Approve Retreat Facilitator  
• Jody Crago informed the board members that the interviews for the 
Retreat Facilitator have been completed. The interviews were recorded 
and available for the board members to view.  
• The recommendation from the Strategic Planning Subcommittee to be 
the Retreat Facilitator is Maureen Robinson. 
• Maureen Robinson lives in California and is a well-known and published 
author of several books on nonprofit boards and organizations.  
• Calvenea Malloy made a motion to approve Maureen Robinson to be 
the Retreat Facilitator for the Museum Foundation’s first Board Retreat.  
• Michelle Reid seconded the motion. The motion was unanimously 
approved. 
• Martin Sepulveda asked if there were any parameters on the 
consultation fee. Jody Crago responded no parameters have yet been 
set, and research on the current market will be reviewed. Additionally, 
travel and accommodations will be included in the offer. 
o Martin Sepulveda made a motion to deputize Joan Clark and 
Jody Crago to begin negotiations with Maureen Robinson for 
a board retreat facilitator agreement.

o Calvenea Malloy seconded the motion. The motion was 
unanimously approved.  
o The agreement will not be authorized until it is approved by 
the full board.  
• Tom Escobedo asked if the retreat is going to be more than one day in 
length. Jody Crago responded the plan is to have the board retreat be 
one day in length, with the possibility of a follow-up session to review 
how the goals are proceeding, etc.  
 
d. Approve Food & Drink Sales for Event on Sunday, October 23, 2022, at the 
Chandler Museum.  
• Jody Crago informed the board of an upcoming event at the Chandler 
Museum to help promote an upcoming exhibition.  
• The Museum will be hosting a traveling exhibition titled, “Thrift Style,“ 
which explores the reuse of feed sacks to make clothing and other 
household items during the Great Depression and WWII.  
• A one-day event, “Market at the Museum: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” will 
be held on Sunday, October 23, 2022, from 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. During 
this event, local artists and vendors, whose work/products align with the 
exhibit’s themes of creative resourcefulness and reducing waste with 
upcycling, will be present. 
• Museum staff has presented this event to the Special Events 
Committee, which has approved for the event to take place.  
• There will not be any food vendors at the event. Museum staff is 
requesting the Museum Foundation Board approve the sale of factory-
sealed food and beverages. Items selected will be shelf-stable and can 
be used for a future event for any objects not sold.  
• Maris Thomas made a motion to approve food and drink sales for the 
“Market at the Museum” event on October 23, 2022. 
• Calvenea Malloy seconded the motion. The motion was unanimously 
approved.  
 
e. Approve Decision for November 2022 Board Meeting. 
• Maris Thomas made a motion to table this topic and defer it for further 
discussion by the Executive Subcommittee at the subcommittee’s 
September 6, 2022, meeting.  
• Martin Sepulveda seconded the motion. The motion was unanimously 
approved.

• An update by the Executive Subcommittee will be reported to the full 
board at the Museum Foundation Board Meeting to be held on Monday, 
September 19, 2022.  
BRIEFING 
a. State 48 Annual Fundraising Event, November 5, 2022 
• The State 48 Foundation is moving its Annual Fundraising Event from 
Phoenix to the Chandler Museum. It will be held on Saturday, November 
5, 2022.  
• The nonprofit will be making a presentation to the City’s Special Events 
Subcommittee for approval. 
 
b. Arizona Historical Records Advisory Board (AHRAB) Grant 
• The Arizona Historical Records Advisory Board (AHRAB) is a central 
advisory board for historical records planning and for national historical 
publications and records commission-funded projects developed and 
carried out in Arizona.  
• The AHRAB grant provides funding to assist organizations finding 
resources to care for records.  
• The Museum Foundation applied for this grant, and it has been 
awarded $1,615.91.  
 
c. Financial Update 
• Maris Thomas reviewed various financial documents. She is grateful for 
the City’s assistance with the recordkeeping, creating the financial 
reports, etc.  
• The Museum Foundation Financial Status is doing very well, thanks to 
the donations from the Chandler Historical Society. Plans for a 
celebration to take place this Fall will begin soon.  
 
d.  Strategic Planning Subcommittee Update 
• There is currently no update from the Strategic Planning Subcommittee. 
 
e.  City Update  
• Jody Crago provided several City updates.  
• Tiffani Egnor is being recognized at the City Council’s Executive Session   
for her 10-year tenure with the City of Chandler. Jody Crago shared with  
the board what he wrote in honor of Tiffani’s recognition.  
• Buildings & Facilities continues to work on HVAC issues that continue to 
occur at the Museum’s air conditioning units.

• Buildings & Facilities and Safety are currently replacing the courtyard 
gate. The new gate will have a crash bar for easy exit during an 
emergency. This project will be completed soon.  
• Buildings & Facilities and Nate Meyers continue to work on the 
humidification of the exhibition space.  
• The City Manager brought up the idea of having the Museum van 
wrapped. Museum staff worked with a vendor to have this completed. 
Various views of Dr. AJ Chandler and Chandler sites are now 
memorialized on the Museum van.  
• Dr. AJ Chandler’s vehicle has been moved to the Chandler Fashion 
Center Mall. It is located near the food court, left of the Crayola 
Experience. The vehicle will be there until at least November. Discussion 
of having it staged there in a more permanent setting is being 
entertained between mall management and Museum staff.   
• Chandler Historical Kiosk and the Sports Hall of Fame Kiosk are 
currently being worked on and should be up and running soon.  
• Earlier this summer, some of the public art fins were damaged. Peter 
Bugg has partnered with an engineer to study how the fins can be made 
stronger to prevent future damage to them. 
 
MEMBERS COMMENTS/ANNOUNCEMENTS 
Barbara Meyerson asked Michelle Mac Lennan to share with the board on the 
upcoming Holiday Party the Arts Commission and the Cultural Foundation are 
planning. Michelle Mac Lennan communicated that the commission and board are 
looking to host a holiday party in lieu of the Arts Commission’s December Meeting. 
The holiday celebration will be held on Tuesday, December 13th, from 5:00 p.m. – 
7:00 p.m. The Museum Foundation Board has been invited to join the Arts 
Commission and the Cultural Foundation at the Holiday Celebration. More details 
will follow.  
 
Barbara Meyerson thanked the board members for their confidence in electing her 
as Chair. She welcomes any ideas from board members.   
 
CALENDAR 
a. Next meeting will be Monday, September 19, 2022, at 5:30 p.m. Meeting 
format will be hybrid (in-person at the Museum or virtually/calling in via 
WebEx).

ADJOURN 
With no other business to discuss, Maris Thomas made a motion to adjourn the 
meeting. Joan Clark seconded the motion. The motion was unanimously approved.
