MINUTES OF THE CHANDLER ARTS COMMISSION MEETING TUESDAY, OCTOBER 18, 2022 5:00 PM Commissioners Present: Farhana Ahmed, José Benavides, Michelle Hirsch, Shachi Kale, Caitlin Penny, Julie Ray, Tim Wiant Commissioners absent: None Staff Present: Peter Bugg, Michelle Mac Lennan CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was called to order at 5:05 PM by Michelle Hirsch via WebEx. UNSCHEDULED / SCHEDULED PUBLIC APPEARANCES / CALL TO PUBLIC - None APPROVAL OF MINUTES FROM THE SEPTEMBER 20 MEETING: a) Shachi made a motion to approve the minutes as written. Tim seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. ACTION AGENDA a) Peter shared the results of the commissioners’ pre-meeting votes on the artist for the Shumway Leadership Academy project, which were that Miguel Godoy received 7 votes with Sara Altieri as the runner-up with 5 votes. José made a motion to approve Miguel Godoy as the artist for the Shumway Leadership Academy project. Farhana seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. b) Peter shared the resules of the commissioners’ pre-meeting votes on the artists for the Traffic Control Box project. Courtney Currier received 4 votes, Adrian Ramirez received 5 votes, Paige Reesor received 4 votes, and Merryn Alaka, Ashley Macias, and Judith Aram were all tied with 3 votes. Peter suggested that the Commission select Merryn and Ashley due to the quality of their applications. After some discussion, the commissioners reached a consensus and agreed. Tim made a motion to select Courtney Currier, Adrian Ramirez, Paige Reesor, Merryn Alaka, and Ashley Macias for the Basha Traffic Control Boxes project. Shachi seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. c) Peter refreshed the commission on the progress of the Zora Folley mural. He shared that there had been an interpersonal conflict between Jerome Fleming and Giovannie Dixon, the artist team for the project, and that Jerome wished to back out of the project and allow Giovannie to finish on his own. He asked the commission to consider how much to pay Jerome for his contributions. Several commissioners asked clarifying questions, including about how much work Jerome had completed for the project and whether there was a design fee listed in the budget the artists provided. After some discussion, Farhana made a motion to approve paying Jerome Fleming between $1,000 and $2,000 for his contributions to the project. Julie seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. BRIEFING ITEMS a) Ongoing public art projects a. Peter has been in communication with Lily Reeves about a fix for her INFLUX signs. She believes she has a workable solution to be completed soon. So far there are no additional funds needed. b. Peter invited the commissioners to the reception for the completion of the Zora Folley mural on December 1 between 4pm and 6pm. c. Peter should be able to share a design for the Pueblo Alto mural at the next meeting. Staff will host another community meeting for the Pueblo Alto residents to approve the design. d. Peter had a meeting with the artist for the Library Art Project last week and shared that things look to be on track for a February install. e. Peter shared the revised designs from Eli Richard for the Downtown Bench project. f. Peter has been in touch with Gerald Clarke and should have more details about that signage project soon. g. Peter shared that due to both him and Michelle Mac Lennan being out of town in the last month there has not been any progress on the CCA lobby wall artwork project, but he should have a proposal ready for the next meeting. b) Maintenance Projects a. Peter shared that there has been no significant maintenance progress due to everything else going on. c) Peter asked the commissioners to mark their calendars for the Holiday Party on December 13 at 5pm. This is a joint party with the Chandler Museum Foundation and the Chandler Cultural Foundation. A location and more details will be communicated at a later date. MEMBERS COMMENTS/ANNOUNCEMENTS - Shachi’s artwork is being installed as a very large window cling at the Mesa Arts Center for their Dia de los Muertos festival this weekend. - José is preparing for an exhibition at the Olney gallery in Central Phoenix that will open on February 4. - Michelle Hirsch recommended her son’s film for horror lovers. She also expressed her sincere gratitude for the kind message she received from the commissioners for the passing of her mother. - Peter got to spend a night in Singapore during his travels this month and was able to view a famous work of public art there.
