Meeting Minutes Domestic Violence Commission Regular Meeting January 11, 2023 | 9:00 a.m. Council Chambers Conference Room 88 E. Chicago St., Chandler, AZ Call to Order The meeting was called to order by Chair Grieve at 9:03 a.m. Roll Call Commission Attendance Staff Attendance Chair Chelsea Grieve Katie Cain, Chandler Police Victim Services/Staff Liaison Vice Chair Teresa Lynn Commissioner Zoe Flippen Commissioner Nicole Bruno Commissioner Aleshia Fessel Commissioner Dawn Curtis Commissioner Torey Gannon Commissioner Ruth Tan Lim Absent Commissioner Samantha Hinchey– excused Commissioner Gretchen Long- unexcused Commissioner LaTisha Codkind- unexcused Scheduled and Unscheduled Public Appearances Sonya Smith – Branch Director – Chandler Compadre Boys & Girls Club of AZ Orlen Hienz – Social Work Intern-My Sister’s Place Mark Whitaker – Exchange Club of Chandler CHAIR GRIEVE called for scheduled speakers. Mark Whitaker – The Exchange Club is a community service organization over 100 years old. Mission is to inspire communities to become better places to live. Our National Child Abuse Prevention Program is helping to have our Field of Hope event at AJ Chandler Park in downtown Chandler April 16-21, 2023. The Field of Hope event is a memorial to the children who have lost Page 2 of 3 their lives in Arizona in the previous year from either direct abuse or neglect. The second purpose is to try to prevent child abuse by raising awareness within the community. There will be a flag for each child who was lost the previous year. Considerations for this year is an informational fair and a fundraiser dinner. Intending to have Opening Ceremony with speakers and tea lights at the flags. Encouraging family and friends to come set up/take down the flags and share the word about the Field of Hope. Requesting ideas on how to share the information about this event. Discussion on having Art downtown and how to direct others to that area. Action Agenda 1. December Domestic Violence Commission Meeting Minutes Move Domestic Violence Commission approve the regular meeting minutes of the December 14, 2022. Commissioner Gannon moved to approve. Seconded by Commissioner Curtis Unanimous Approval 2. December 2022 Domestic Violence Commission Community Outreach Subcommittee Meeting Minutes Move Domestic Violence Commission approve the meeting minutes of the December 14, 2022 Community Outreach Subcommittee meeting. Commissioner Gannon moved to approve. Seconded by Commissioner Lynn Unanimous Approval Discussion 4. Domestic Violence Event 2023 Commissioner Gannon will reserve Avion Center for Tuesday, September 26th, 2023. She will request set up at 8am and event from 10am-noon. Theme is Native/Indigenous. Need ideas for the title of the event. Possibly have some Indigenous appetizers, think of some ideas for visual components. 5. Community Outreach Subcommittee CHAIR GRIEVE shared that Discussion of Healthy Relationships activity has been a success so far at local high school and junior high schools. Need people to sign up for other school’s activities for January, February, and April. In future, April or May, the DV Commission will go to School Board and show pictures and resources and give them the amount of youth who we had contacted. And Page 3 of 3 share that we would love to keep doing this in the future. Katie Cain will order give away items for the tables. Gave the school a deadline of first week of March for the Art project. Chair and Staff Liaison will meet with Peter Bugg – Chandler Art Commission – staff liaison. Member Comments/Announcements None. Calendar The next regular meeting will be held on Wednesday, February 8, 2023, at 9 a.m., in the Council Chambers Conference Room, 88 E. Chicago St. The next Community Outreach Subcommittee meeting will be held on Wednesday, January 11, 2023, at 10 a.m., in the Council Chambers Conference Room, 88 E. Chicago St. Informational Items Staff Liaison shared that the new Commissioner appointment and reappointment will begin in March 2023. Spread the news to anyone who may be interested in serving on the board. January 23, 2023 will be the proclamation for Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month at 6:00 PM at the Chandler Council meeting.
