Meeting Minutes Domestic Violence Commission Regular Meeting March 8, 2023 | 9:00 a.m. Council Chambers Conference Room 88 E. Chicago St., Chandler, AZ Call to Order The meeting was called to order by Chair Grieve at 9:04 a.m. Roll Call Commission Attendance Staff Attendance Chair Chelsea Grieve Denise Allen, Victim Services Advocate Vice Chair Teresa Lynn Lacey Rojas, Victim Services Advocate Commissioner LaTisha Codkind Commissioner Dawn Curtis Commissioner Aleshia Fessel Commissioner Zoe Flippen Commissioner Torey Gannon Commissioner Samantha Hinchey Commissioner Ruth Tan Lim Absent Commissioner Nicole Bruno - excused Guest Attendance Sonia Smith – Boys and Girls Club Compadre Tonia Hardy – SWIWC Lt. Governor Monica Antone – Gila River Indian Community Page 2 of 3 Scheduled and Unscheduled Public Appearances Tania Hardy – SWIWC SWIWC is the new acronym and no longer goes by South West Indigenous Women’s Coalition to be all inclusive. SWIWC is a Statewide Tribal Coalition that started in 2006, to address violence in our communities with a focus on domestic and sexual abuse, teen dating violence, stalking, missing and murder of indigenous women, sex trafficking, and LGBTQ. A Murder of Indigenous Women event will be held at the State Capital on May 5th, 2023. Monica Antone – Gila River Indian Community Lt. Governor & AZ Coalition for Missing and Indigenous Woman and Children Cultural and traditional resources are used for healing. There are domestic violence shelters (Eagles on Wings) work with Against Abuse in Casa Grande. VAWA now enables the Tribe to prosecute against non-tribal abusers on our Community, and now enables prosecution for violence against children and elders. We are finding human trafficking in sober living homes. Action Agenda and Discussion 1. January 2023 Domestic Violence Commission Community Outreach Subcommittee Meeting Minutes Move Domestic Violence Commission approve the meeting minutes of the February 8, 2023 Community Outreach Subcommittee meeting. Motion: Commissioner Curtis Seconded: Commissioner Flippen UNANIMOUS APPROVAL 3. Turn Chandler Purple Event in October Move to promote/participate in Turn Chandler Purple Event in October Motion: Commissioner Gannon Seconded: Commissioner Hinchey UNANIMOUS APPROVAL Page 3 of 3 Discussion 4. Domestic Violence Event 2023 – September 26, 2023 – Suggestions: Themes – 1. Centering Native American Voices in Arizona to Raise Awareness of Domestic Violence 2. Honoring Survivor Stories from the Indigenous and Native American Communities. Have a Native American male do a blessing to start the event, Basket Dancers with Healing Songs, address ways to work with Native American survivors, and legislative updates for Native Americans. Ideas for speakers were discussed. 5. Domestic Violence Commission Community Outreach Subcommittee – no meeting today. Member Comments/Announcements March 23, 2023 Council Meeting will have approval of new Commissioners through April. May 1, 2023 is the effective start date the new appointees. Calendar The next regular meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 12, 2023, at 9 a.m., in the Council Chambers Conference Room, 88 E. Chicago St., Chandler, Arizona. The next Community Outreach Subcommittee meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 12, 2023, at 10 a.m., in the Council Chambers Conference Room, 88 E. Chicago St., Chandler, Arizona.
