MILITARY & VETERAN’S AFFAIRS COMMISSION
REGULAR MEETING MINUTES
April 11, 2023
1. CALL TO ORDER/ROLL CALL
Chair Dalpe called the meeting to order on Tuesday, April 11, 2023, at 5:00 p.m.

2. ACTION AGENDA
a. Approval of the Minutes of the Military and Veterans Affairs Commission Regular
Meeting of March 14, 2023
Chair Dalpe requested a motion for approval of the minutes for the March 14, 2023, Military
and Veterans Affairs Commission meeting. Commissioner Levinson made the motion to
approve the minutes of the March 14, 2023, minutes. Commissioner Waltzer seconded the
motion.
The minutes were approved 6-0 by all Commission members present.
3. DISCUSSION
a. Update – Discussion on hosting a Service Recognition Event recognizing high school
students who have committed to military service after graduation.

Commissioner Waltzer updated the Commission on the food that will be provided for the
event on May 9, 2023. The following venders will be used: West Valley Barbeque, Ghett’ Yo
Tacos, Mingle and Graze, and Pie Snob. Sandy Popovich will pay the food service invoices
using the one-time funding from the City. Costs will be approximately $3,500 - $4,000.
Commissioner Levinson updated the Commission on his discussion with Sergeant Ortega
regarding the RSVP’s to the event. Approximately thirty enlisted will attend. The Air Force,
Army, Navy, and Marine Corp will be represented by the newly enlisted. The schedule for
the National Anthem, the Pledge of Allegiance, and the Presentation of Colors is being
coordinated. Mayor Hartke is expected to be the Master of Ceremony and Vice Mayor
Orlando will be the Key Note Speaker.
b. Military and Veterans Affairs Commission Retreat – Dates are being considered for a
retreat for the Commission to discuss goals for the coming year.
There is a conflict with the original retreat date planned for Friday, June 16, 2023 from 12:00
p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Chandler Museum 300 S. Chandler Village Drive, Chandler, AZ 85226.
The new date will be July 21, 2023 from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Chandler Museum 300
S. Chandler Village Drive, Chandler, AZ 85226.
4. MEMBER COMMENTS/ANNOUNCEMENTS
a. Chair Dalpe shared with the Commission that the services for Jack Holder will be on Friday,
April 14, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. at Cornerstone Church.
b. Vice-Chair Facciponti shared with the Commission that the Field of Hope dedication will be
at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday April 16 and run through April 21. The Field of Hope is a memorial
set up to recognize children who have died at the hands of abuse or neglect. This year there
will be 128 flags placed at AJ Chandler Park West. An information booth will be available and
located in the San Marcos Parking lot on the day of the dedication.
c. Vice-Chair Facciponti brought up a discussion point for the Commission regarding how to
better disseminate information to Veterans. Chair Dalpe commented that trying to get all
the information in one place is challenging. Discussion ensued.
d. Chair Dalpe shared with the Commission that Congressman Andy Biggs will be at the Drop
Zone on Saturday, May 13, 2023 from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at the American Leadership
Academy Applied Technologies Campus, 7729 E. Pecos Road, Mesa, AZ 85212. The Drop
Zone is an event designed to provide a wide variety of resources to veterans.
5. SCHEDULED/UNSCHEDULED PUBLIC APPEARANCES
a. None

6. CALENDAR ITEMS
a. The May meeting has been canceled due to the conflict with the Veteran Service Recognition
event the same day.
b. The next meeting will be June 13, 2023, at 5:00 p.m.
7. ADJOURNMENT
With no further items, Chair Dalpe adjourned the meeting at 5:27 p.m.
