MINUTES OF THE CHANDLER ARTS COMMISSION MEETING TUESDAY, AUGUST 15, 2023 5:00 PM Commissioners Present: Michelle Hirsch, Caitlin Penny, Mahfam Moeeni-Alarcon, Rosanna Lantigua, Shachi Kale, Tim Wiant, Julie Ray Commissioners Absent: none Staff Present: Peter Bugg, Caroline Hudson-Naef CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order at 5:03 PM by Michelle Hirsch UNSCHEDULED /SCHEDULED PUBLIC APPEARANCES / CALL TO PUBLIC a) None APPROVAL OF MINUTES FROM THE JUNE 20 MEETING: a) Tim made a correction that he was present for this meeting. Rosanna made a motion to approve the minutes as corrected. Mahfam seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. ACTION AGENDA a) Select finalists for Tumbleweed Recreation Center project Peter shared the top 6 artists that the commissioners had voted on before the meeting, which were Bobby Zokaites, the London/Zischke/Koss team, Matthew Salenger, Blessing Hancock, Joseph O’Connell, and Simon Donovan. After discussion, Michelle made a motion to select Zokaites, Salenger, and O’Connell as finalists. Tim seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. b) Select representatives for Tumbleweed Recreation Center project Michelle and Caitlin volunteered to attend the finalist presentation session on Monday, September 11 at 3pm. Rosanna made a motion to approve Michelle and Caitlin as representatives for this meeting. Julie seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. c) Select artists for vinyl artwork RFQ Peter shared the top choices as voted by the commissioners prior to the meeting. After some discussion, Rosanna made a motion to approve Junior Toltecatl, Jerome Fleming, Jon Arvizu, Goolam Saber, Maria Bueno, Peniel Macias, Fernando Cabrera Gonzalez, and Kelsey Phillips as the artists for this project with Ariana Enriquez serving as an alternate. Caitlin seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. d) Select finalists for Apache Park mural Peter shared the top choices as voted by the commissioners prior to the meeting, which were: Ariana Enriquez, Noe Barnett, Julian Martin Villalpando, Jessica Gonzales, and Jesse Perry. After some discussion, Tim made a motion to select Noe, Julian, and Jessica as finalists for the Apache Park mural project. Michelle seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. e) Approve call to teaching artists Peter shared a draft RFQ for the CUSD teaching artist project. Michelle made the case for working with Kyrene schools in future school projects. Tim and Shachi provided minor edits. Shachi made a motion to approve the call given this feedback. Tim seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. BRIEFING ITEMS a) Ongoing public art projects a. The CCA Lobby project is moving along; the goal is to have it installed by February for the State of the City. b. The Fire Station Memorial project is also in progress, but the location had to be changed due to underground obstructions. The new location is still in front of the building but mandatory street signage will somewhat impede the view. c) Outside Public Art Projects a. The City Hall Median project may require additional funds, and the city has asked the Arts Commission to consider contributing. Peter will share more information at the next meeting. b. There is a placemaking initiative with the Galveston neighborhood that we may be asked to contribute to in the near future. d) Maintenance Projects a. Staff is working on getting one damaged Sun Slide on the Oregon St parking garage fixed. b. Peter has made progress on fixing the Museum shade structure and has determined that replacing the damaged fins instead of repairing them will cost about the same and look better. These repairs are covered through the city’s insurance. c. The city was able to pay Lily Reeves $7,500 for her damaged INFLUX piece through insurance. MEMBERS COMMENTS /ANNOUNCEMENT - Michelle shared about her recent visit to Vermont, where she especially enjoyed the Shelburne Museum. CALENDAR a) The next regular meeting will be September 19 in person.
