Community Needs Assessment Leadership Group Kickoff September 13, 2023 Meeting Agenda • Welcome! • Introductions • Overview of the Needs Assessment Process • Your Time Commitment • Mini-focus group (time-permitting) 2 Project Goals • To improve the quality of life for residents living in the City of Chandler by identifying and describing key community resources, issues, challenges, and trends in the region • To enable the City of Chandler to meet assessment requirements for federal funding 3 Social Determinants of Health 4 SOURCE: Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) Needs Assessment Research Methodology • Strategic secondary data review • Stakeholder interviews (Target = 15) • Focus group discussions (Target = 4) • Community survey • Needs prioritization process 5 Strategic secondary data review • Crescendo gathers data from a variety of validated data sources, such as: • U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey • Centers for Disease Control and Prevention • Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System / Youth Risk Behavior Survey • County Health Rankings and Roadmaps • …and many more • The City of Chandler and partners may provide any service use data (internal data such as diagnosis codes or other programmatic data) for analysis as part of the CNA 6 Stakeholder Interviews • The City of Chandler identifies agency partners, community leaders, and others who are key sources of information on assets, needs, and challenges across the community • Crescendo interviews up to 30 stakeholders by Zoom or phone using interview guide approved by the City of Chandler • Interviews also serve to identify focus group opportunities and/or community survey promoters 7 Focus group discussions • The City of Chandler identifies populations of interest and community organizations that may be opportunities for four (4) on-site or virtual focus groups • In contrast to interviews, focus groups provide groups of community members with the opportunity to identify topics and issues of interest and to build off of each other’s observations 8 Community survey • Crescendo drafts a survey with content and format tailored to gather perspectives from a broad sample of community members on emerging community needs and access to service issues • The survey builds off of previous research activities and engages respondents across the community in high-level needs prioritization • Depending on sample size, the survey can yield insights into differences across respondent groups based on sociodemographic characteristics 9 Needs prioritization • Crescendo drafts list of needs based on information gathered across research activities • Leadership Group prioritizes needs • Survey- Each Leadership Group member rates each need in terms of importance and provides comments on rationale • Needs prioritization session (October) – Leadership Group meets to discuss average need scores and de- identified comments in order to finalize list of prioritized needs 10 Project Timeline 11 Your Time Commitment • Thank you for participating in the Leadership Group! • Time commitment (Now – end of October): • Leadership Group kickoff (1 hour) • Community survey (10 minutes) • Needs Prioritization Process (Brief survey and meeting) • We appreciate your help with promoting participation in these research activities! 12 Questions? 13 Brief Discussion 14 Local Perspective What one thing should we have in mind as we conduct this assessment across the City of Chandler? 15 Top Needs From your perspective, what are the top challenges or struggles facing your community today?
