MILITARY & VETERAN’S AFFAIRS COMMISSION 
REGULAR MEETING MINUTES 
AUGUST 8, 2023 
    
1. CALL TO ORDER/ROLL CALL    
Chair Dalpe called the meeting to order on Tuesday, August 8, 2023, at 5:00 p.m.

2. ACTION AGENDA 
a. Approval of the Minutes of the Military and Veterans Affairs Commission Regular 
Meeting of  June 13, 2023  
 
Chair Dalpe requested a motion for approval of the minutes for the June 13, 2023, Military 
and Veterans Affairs Commission regular meeting.  Commissioner Waltzer made the 
motion to approve the minutes of the June 13, 2023, minutes.  Commissioner Facciponti 
seconded the motion. 
 
 
The minutes were approved 7-0 by all Commission members present.

3. DISCUSSION 
 
 
a. Update on the Veteran Memorial Wall project at Veteran’s Oasis Park.   
 
Mickey Ohland, Community Services Planning Manager, updated the Commission regarding 
the progress of the project.    Mr. Ohland relayed that the money is not in the current budget 
but could be considered for the next fiscal year.  He also presented a picture of what the wall 
could look like.  The Commission was happy with the proposal and encouraged Mr. Ohland 
to continue moving forward with the project.                  
 
b. Review of the Military and Veterans Affairs Commission Retreat 
 
The retreat was held on August 4, 2023 at 12:00 p.m. at the Chandler Museum 300 S. 
Chandler Village Drive, Chandler, AZ 85226. Beth Chepelsky, City of Chandler Organizational 
Development Senior Program Manager, facilitated the meeting.  The Commission agreed to 
pursue the following projects: 
 
 
I. 
Military Appreciation Breakfast – Commissioner Dunn and Commissioner Farabee 
 
The breakfast will be held in the November time-frame and honor current and former 
veterans.  Program to be developed. 
 
 
II. 
Veteran’s Day – Commissioner Simon and Commissioner Levinson 
 
Presented by the Military and Veterans Affairs Commission and Community Services 
Department, the civic event will honor all who have served and continued to serve our 
country with acknowledgments. This event will take place on November 11, 2023 and 
resemble last year’s event.  
 
 
III. 
Veteran’s Town Hall Lunch – Commissioner Waltzer, Commissioner Farabee, and 
Chair Dalpe 
 
This event will be revamped with a new format focusing on issues and resources for 
veterans.   
 
 
IV. 
Military Bound – Commissioner Levinson and Commissioner Waltzer 
 
This event will recognize new recruits as they embark on their military career.

c. Discussion and planning for the upcoming 2023 Veteran’s Day Event 
 
Commissioner Levinson said that the event will primarily be the same as last year.  Andy 
Bass, Deputy City Manager, will be reaching out to Commissioner Simon and 
Commissioner Levinson about the event.  Mr. Bass suggested a finding a speaker for the 
event and he is researching a military fly-over.

a. The next regular meeting of the Military and Veterans Affairs Commission will be on 
September 12, 2023 at 5:00 p.m.

With no further items, Chair Dalpe adjourned the meeting at 5:22 p.m.
