MINUTES OF THE CHANDLER ARTS COMMISSION MEETING Vision Gallery Multipurpose Room A104 10 East Chicago Street Tuesday, September 19, 2023, at 5:00 p.m. Commissioners Present: Michelle Hirsch, Caitlin Penny, Mahfam Moeeni-Alarcon, Rosanna Lantigua, Shachi Kale, Tim Wiant, Julie Ray Commissioners Absent: None Staff Present: Peter Bugg, Jerry Cabezudo (Intern) 1. CALL TO ORDER / ROLL CALL The meeting was called to order at 5:03 PM by Michelle Hirsch 2. APPROVAL OF MINUTES a. Minutes of June 20, 2023 - Rosanna made the motion to approve the minutes. Shachi seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. b. Minutes of August 15, 2023 - Julie made the motion to approve the minutes. Tim seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. 3. SCHEDULED/UNSCHEDULED PUBLIC APPEARANCES/CALL TO PUBLIC Jerry, the Vision Gallery’s new intern, was introduced. 4. ACTION AGENDA a. Select additional finalist for Apache Park Mural - Peter described the artists he met with: Julian Villalpando/Kraze, Jessica Gonzalez, Noe Barnett, Ariana Enriquez, Jesse Perry, and Joel Geist. After some discussion, the commission found that Joel Geist was the preferred option overall. Caitlin made the motion to select Joel as a new finalist. Shachi seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. 5. BRIEFING ITEMS a. Ongoing public art projects I. Artworks for purchase - Peter mentioned the artists that have been considered: Cam Decausin, Jacob Meters, and Daniel Nez. He also made the point that there is enough money to purchase one piece from each artist instead of choosing just one of them. II. Tumbleweed Recreation Center - Peter said he needs a little more time to find more artists. III. Vinyl Projects - Peter stated that there will be a meeting with Jon Arvizu sometime between October and December. IV. CCA Lobby - The commission hopes to see the mayor make an appearance. V. Fire Station Memorial i. Install in Dec / Jan. Reception in Jan, will invite commissioners VI. Teaching artist request for qualifications - Peter stated there are 2 CUSD schools and 3 Kyrene schools involved. He also mentioned that the 2-month timeframe for the classes will have to be condensed to a 2-week period in the Spring. b. Outside Projects I. City Hall Median - Peter described this project as slow-going with likely additional costs. The commission may receive a request for additional funding. II. Galveston neighborhood project - Peter mentioned how much people have enjoyed the traffic box public art, and he wants to add 5 more installations. In Galveston, Professor Rafael Martinez Orozco has been gathering LatinX histories. These histories are going to be the basis for the artworks. The commission whole-heartedly expressed interest. III. Review funding request for Lions’ Club / Children’s Cancer Center - The commission decided to not move forward with this project but are still happy to recommend artists who would be willing to help. IV. Villas on McQueen i. 5 Buildings – 2 are community supportive services c. Maintenance projects I. Oregon St Parking Garage II. Museum Shade Structure i. New test fins fabricated – scheduling installation 6. MEMBERS COMMENTS / ANNOUNCEMENTS Tim described an exhibition he went to in Downtown Phoenix that had a wonderful showcase involving stars. Peter said that his friend Jose was at Burning Man. Julie mentioned that she was interested in getting the commission involved with the schoolboard to try to bring more visibility and support to the arts. 7. CALENDAR a. Next regular meeting will be October 17 via webex. 8. INFORMATION ITEMS Current Exhibitions a. Vision Gallery – Unbound – August 26 – November 9, 2023. b. Chandler Center for the Arts Gallery – Creations from Within, Vol. 2 (Edgar Fernandez) – August 12 – October 21, 2023.
