Meeting Minutes Mayor’s Youth Commission Regular Meeting October 3, 2023, 5:00 p.m. Downtown Chandler Library, Copper Room South 22 S. Unscheduled Public Appearances None. Action Agenda September 12, 2023 Minutes. Approval of the September 12, 2023 Mayor’s Youth Commission minutes. Action Agenda Motion and Vote Commissioner Ananditha Sivakumaran moved to approve the September 12, 2023 Mayor’s Youth Commission meeting minutes. Seconded by Commissioner Makenzie Cole. Motion carried unanimously. (15-4-0) Briefing 2. Library Teen Programs Overview – Alba Trujillo, Library Specialist Ms. Trujillo and representatives from the Downtown Library Teen Advisory Board came to welcome the Mayor’s Youth Commission to the Downtown Library. The Downtown Library Teen Advisory Board introduced themselves and what they do, such as hosting free programs every month. They meet on the first Tuesday of the month and work with the other Chandler Public Libraries to do system wide programs. The Downtown Library Teen Advisory board introduced their program called “The Spot”, which opened 2 years ago and is a place for programs, movies, and a safe place for teens to make friends, do homework, and network. They offered volunteer hours to anyone who wants to join these events and gave the commission a warm welcome. 3. Maricopa County Tobacco Cessation Update – John Sefton, Community Services Director We are going to hold the Maricopa County Tobacco Cessation Update until our November meeting because Mr. John Sefton was absent. 4. Special Event Funding Panel Debrief – Commissioner Aashika Dupati We are going to hold the Special Events Funding Panel Debrief until our November meeting because Commissioner Dupati was absent. 5. City Council Meeting Debrief On September 18th, members of the Commission attended a City Council meeting and City Hall tour. Commissioner Josh Victoria talked about how in the debrief, the City Council talked about a wide variety of topics such as licenses for companies, public development, and new laws. Chair Arnav Nigam talks about how they got to visit the video recording room and how unique the experience was. 6. Teen Leadership Academy Debrief Chair Arnav Nigam debriefs on last year’s TLA, and how it was a two day academy, focused on civic engagement and learning about the city. However, this year, MYC will plan a one day workshop. Commissioner Nivid suggests to the Commission of having a theme and Alexis reminds the Commission to think about what the goal and purpose of the workshop is. Commissioner Makenzie Cole and Commissioner Anaditha Sivakumaran tell the commission why having a theme has benefits, especially because the workshop is only one day this year. The Commission decides to have a theme and split into three different groups: Icebreaker/Social Cohesion, Civic Engagement, and Substance Abuse/Mental Health. The three different groups came up with a rough idea of what they want their activities to be for TLA and present to the whole group their ideas. 7. Charades Commissioners participate in charades as the closing icebreaker activity, forming bonds with their TLA groups. Member Comments/Announcements Calendar 8.
