Meeting Minutes Mayor’s Youth Commission Regular Meeting November 14, 2023, 5:00 p.m. Public Safety Training Center 3550 S. Dobson Rd. Unscheduled Public Appearances None. Action Agenda 1. October 3, 2023 Minutes. Approval of the October 3, 2023 Mayor’s Youth Commission minutes. Action Agenda Motion and Vote Commissioner Ananditha Sivakumaran moved to approve the October 3, 2023 Mayor’s Youth Commission meeting minutes. Seconded by Commissioner Josh Victoria. Motion carried unanimously. (16-3-0) Briefing 2. Public Safety Training Center Overview – Officer Noah Deuker Officer Deuker is part of the Chandler police department. He trains youth who are interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement or have a passion to become a police officer. The Chandler Training Center has many different programs as well as a Woman Self Defense Program. The Commission toured the Training Center with Officer Deuker. 3. Special Events Funding Panel Debrief – Commissioner Aashika Dupati Commissioner Aashika Dupati discussed how she helped allocate funds (around 1,000 to 6, 000 dollars) to nonprofits across the City such as the Chinese Federation and Ballet, Jewish Film Festival, and more. Commissioner Dupati mentioned it was a unique experience meeting other people and hearing their stories of how they started their nonprofits and what they do. 4. For Our City Day Debrief During For Our City Day Commissioners helped to paint a house and had the special opportunity of starring in the Mayor’s video. They also received a t-shirt and went to the celebration fair afterwards. 5. Polar Express Volunteer Opportunity Chair Nigam discussed the Polar Express Volunteer Opportunity which is on December 6th, 7th, and 8th, located at the Tumbleweed Recreation Center. The Commissioners will dress up as elves and will help assist the event, as well as having the unique opportunity of riding a train at the end. 6. Parade of Lights Volunteer Opportunity On December 2nd, three senior Commissioners will go help judge the floats that people all over the city have worked hard on to create and present. 7. Teen Leadership Academy Planning The goal of today’s meeting was to finalize a schedule for TLA, such as finding how long the commissioners’ activities will be and which activities they plan on doing. 8. Woofstock Reminder Woofstock is on November 18th and the commission will split into two groups to hand out Puppuccinos. Member Comments/Announcements Commissioner Makenzie Cole talks about substance use in Arizona. 61% of opioid deaths in Arizona happened in Maricopa from January to July this year. Narcan, which is a nasal spray, is used to delay people’s deaths until First Aid Responders can help. Commissioner Cole wants Narcan implemented within the city, such as in first aid kits and wants people to be trained on how to use it. Commissioner Cole wants the Commission’s support in order to tackle this problem and the Mayor and City Council are currently working together to solve this issue as well. Calendar 9.
