Meeting Minutes Domestic Violence Commission Regular Meeting November 8, 2023 | 9:00 a.m. Council Chambers Conference Room 88 E. Chicago St., Chandler, AZ Call to Order The meeting was called to order by Chair Grieve at 9:09 a.m. Roll Call Commission Attendance Staff Attendance Commissioner LaTisha Codkind Denise Allen, Victim Services/Staff Liaison Commissioner Dawn Curtis Commissioner Aleshia Fessel Chair Chelsea Grieve Commissioner Samantha Hinchey Commissioner Salina Imam Commissioner Ruth Tan Lim Absent –excused Commissioner Tracy DuCharme Commissioner Sonia Smith Scheduled and Unscheduled Public Appearances 1. Mark Whitaker - Exchange Club - Field of Hope 2024 Field of Hope is a memorial held each April during Child Abuse Prevention month. Event will be April 14 to 19th – 2024. 2021 showed 128 deaths - per the Arizona Child Fatality Review Team report, with 2022 numbers coming out next week. The Exchange Club is trying to find ways to make the event resonate and increase the attendance of the public, so that there can be more awareness. Possibly have High School chorus to sing at the event. Survivor stories. Information fair put by the field for more visibility, if possible. Information Fair will be held again. Possibly get digital flyers that other can distribute. Would like more advertising prior to the event, possibly through the City of Chandler. Any suggestions would be welcome. Approval of Minutes for Domestic Violence Commission Subcommittee Motion to approve Domestic Violence Commission Subcommittee Minutes of September 13, 2023 Motion: Commissioner Curtis Seconded: Commissioner Codkind UNANIMOUS APPROVAL 5. Motion to appoint Commissioner Codkind as Vice-Chair. Motion: Commissioner Hinchey Seconded: Commissioner Tan Lim UNANIMOUS APPROVAL Discussion 6. Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month Proclamation – February 2024 - Commissioner Curtis will bring it to next meeting. 7. Pride in Chandler event – Saturday, November 18, 2023 at Desert Breeze Park – Commissioners Fessel, Grieve, Codkind and ACESDV will attend/table at the event from 3-6 p.m. 8. Chandler Unified School District (CUSD) Teen outreach for school year 2023/24 Chair Grieve and Katie Cain met with CUSD on Oct. 23, 2023. Four schools responded to Chair Grieve. Chair Grieve sent follow-up out to all the schools. Commission Members requested directions on where to park. Chandler HS – Dec 6th. Lunches are from 9:53 am to 12:16 p.m., and Commissioners will be at the school from 9:30 to 12:30 p.m. Commissioner Curtis confirmed attendance, and possibly Commissioners Hinchey and Codkind. Emails have/will be sent out for confirmation or follow-up for the schools below. Bogle JH is interested in the second half of April 2024. Page 3 of 3 Casteel HS is interested in DV Commission being at a lunch and/or at an assembly. Perry HS is interested. Two schools asked to see the materials. 9. DV Awareness Event 2024 - Theme – Intergenerational Trauma – Commissioner Hinchey can get a survivor speaker. Chelsea Grieve can speak on family history and has ideas for family history of trauma. Commissioner Hinchey suggested event name of “Domestic Violence through the Generations”. Maybe have a panel table and have ready-made questions, with images/power point of families in the background. Member Comments/Announcements Invite Mark Whitaker/Exchange Club to the December DV Commission/Subcommittee meeting, along with other agencies, to discuss Field of Hope ideas for 2024. Safe DVS is with Solari. Solari handles: 211, Housing Hub, 988, DVS phone screening, etc. ACESDV- last 40 hour advocate training is in December 2023 Catholic Charities – no funding, Sex Assault program ends Nov 15th, 2023. Calendar 10. Next Regular Domestic Violence Committee meeting on December 13, 2023 at 9:00 a.m. Next Community Outreach Subcommittee meeting on November 8, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. – cancelled due to no quorum.
