Meeting Minutes Mayor’s Youth Commission Regular Meeting January 9, 2024, 5:00 p.m. Chandler Council Chambers 88 E. Unscheduled Public Appearances None. Action Agenda 1. December 12, 2023 Minutes. Approval of the December 12, 2023 Mayor’s Youth Commission minutes. Action Agenda Motion and Vote Commissioner Sanjana Balaji moved to approve the December 12, 2023 Mayor’s Youth Commission meeting minutes. Seconded by Commissioner Ananditha Sivakumaran Motion carried unanimously. (17-2-0) Briefing 2. Mock City Council Meeting MYC Members had a council meeting with the mayor where they presented a case, with various roles. Council Meeting of January 9th, 2024 was called at 5:16 pm. The council was here to consider a proposal of new mixed-use development downtown by Donaldson Developers, LLC. Residents were scheduled to appear and were allowed to speak for 3 minutes. The first resident was Shripal. He was here for 30 years and doesn’t appreciate the developments due to the consequences it has caused. The second resident was Joseph. He currently takes 20 to 30 minutes to walk to his work downtown. The third resident was Anthony. He is worried about parking and wants to know how the city will educate about parking and about new mixed-use development. The residents currently do not have a place scheduled to park. The concern for Anthony is for future residents of Chandler. The business owner, Olivia, owns a boutique gift shop in Downtown Chandler for 15 years. She is excited for the new development in the area and is excited for new people to come. She did have trouble parking for the past few years later here and would like more parking areas if possible. Development Services Director Ashwin and Downtown Redevelopment Manager Makenzie presented about the parking situation. There are five garages, with another under construction. The city is working to educate the public through a social media campaign. Councilmembers then vote to either approve or reject the resolution. Councilmember three has made a motion to approve the resolution with Councilmember four backing. The Mayor and Vice Mayor vote yes with a stipulation with parking. Councilmember one and two voting nay. Councilmembers three, four and five vote aye. The resolution passes with a vote of 5-2, with a stipulation of parking. The meeting adjourns at 5:34 pm. Commissioners then talk to the Mayor about what an actual council meeting may look like. Usually, the Mayor asks Councilmembers about their input and they talk to residents beforehand. On Thursday, January 11th, the council has 21 items that needed to weigh on. The city often talks about the budget. The council will start the budget for the new year with the primary focus on property taxes and then about the overall budget, such as whether there needs to be more workers to maintain the city’s parks. The city is always in the process of hiring due to people retiring every year. The budget will be assigned by June and be in action by July. The Mayor and Council talk a lot with residents. Recently, there was a resident who brought up a diving issue and it is the Mayor and Council’s job to see how helpful it will be to Chandler and the public. There are also 30 other boards and commissions that work all around the Chandler. 3. Teen Leadership Academy Planning MYC Commissioners work on substance material for the various activities for TLA. 4. Volunteer Opportunity-Chandler Innovation Fair On February 24, different vendors will come with different focuses in innovation, science, and technology, to compete for awards.
