Meeting Minutes Human Relations Commission Regular Meeting February 21, 2024 | 6:00 p.m. Chandler City Council Chambers 88 E. Chicago St., Chandler, AZ Call to Order The meeting was called to order by Chair Maxwell at 6:02 p.m. Roll Call Commission Attendance Staff Attendance Chair Erica Maxwell Niki Tapia, DEI Officer Vice Chair Kriti Argwal Adrianna Erickson, DEI Coordinator Commissioner Betty Ramirez Commissioner Tyler Conaway Commissioners Absent Commissioner John Anguiano Commissioner Pamela Morris Commissioner Jacob Bello Commissioner Joseph Curbelo Commissioner Garry Ong Commissioner Shannon Begay Commissioner Tony Pham Scheduled and Unscheduled Public Appearances Josephy Yang, advisor for the Arizona Korean Association, thanked the commission for approving funds to help support the Arizona Korean Festival. He shared that there were approximately 500 people in attendance including the Korean Consulate. Consent Agenda Motion and Vote Commissioner Anguiano moved to approve the December 16, 2023, Human Relations Commission meeting minutes; Seconded by Commissioner Conaway. Motion carried unanimously (8-0). Page 2 of 2 Discussion HRC Member Survey Chair Erica Maxwell thanked the commission for completing the HRC survey that was shared at the last meeting. She stated that the Contigo kickoff was the most attended event. DEI Officer Niki Tapia thanked the commissioners for attending so many events and being out in the community. DEI Spring Events Ms. Tapia informed the commission of all the upcoming events. She also shared that a calendar invite is sent out for all the events so that commissioners have all the information for community events. DEI Division Update Ms. Tapia shared that there has been a lot of progress made in the last two years and gave a brief presentation at the programs and initiatives that have come from the DEI division. Police Updates Acting Assistant Chief Jason Sieczkowski stated that there has been a downward trend among all crime categories in the city. He also shared that there has been a slight increase in bias-based crimes and graffiti. He informed the commission that Commander Dan Shellum will be the new HRC Representative and expressed his gratitude to the commission for all their hard work. Member Comments/Announcements Commissioner Garry Ong shared the Chinese New Year event at the Chandler Center for the Arts was well attended and a wonderful celebration of the new year. Calendar The next regular meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 17, 2023, at 6 p.m., in the Chandler City Council Chambers, 88 E.
