MILITARY & VETERAN’S AFFAIRS COMMISSION
REGULAR MEETING MINUTES
MARCH 12, 2024
1. CALL TO ORDER/ROLL CALL
Chair Farabee called the meeting to order on Tuesday, March 12, 2024, at 5:00 p.m.

2. ACTION AGENDA
a. Approval of the Regular Minutes of the Military and Veterans Affairs
Commission Regular Meeting of February 13, 2024
Chair Farabee tabled the minutes to the April 9, 2024, meeting so that corrections
could be made.

3. BRIEFING
a. Field of Honor at Veterans Oasis Park - Corey Povar, Community Services Assistant
Director
Mr. Povar shared with the Commission that additional funding for the next phase
of the project is currently being considered by City Council for the next fiscal year.
b. Events Calendar – Corey Povar, Community Services Assistant Director
Mr. Povar shared a list of events that the Commission may want to attend to
represent to meet the Commission’s outreach goal. The list includes:

Family Easter Celebration (March/April 2024)
•
Chandler Jazz Festival and Family Bike Ride (April 2024)
•
All-American Bash (July 2024)
•
For Our City and Halloween Spooktacular (October 2024)
•
Woofstock (November 2024
•
Tumbleweed Tree Lighting and Parade of Lights (December 2024
•
Embracing Wellness and Multicultural Festival (Jan 2025)
c. Vacancy for the Military and Veterans Affairs Commission - Corey Povar,
Community Services Assistant Director
Mr. Povar relayed to the Commission that applications are being reviewed after
which they will be sent to the mayor for a decision on who would be appointed to
the Commission. Commissioner Waltzer submitted his resignation from the
Commission effective March of 2024. There are currently two vacancies that need
to be filled.
d. Treasury Report – Sandy Popovich, Commission Secretary
Ms. Popovich explained that no changes have occurred since the last Treasury
Report in February 2024.
4. DISCUSSION
a. Military Bound Event
Commissioner Levinson will be leading the event which will be held at the City
Council Chambers on May 8, 2024.

b. Commission Outreach
Mr. Povar handed out name badges to the Commission members to be used when
the Commission attends outreach events. The use of cards and tri-fold handouts
were discussed. Suggestions for the tri-fold handout include links to mental health
and suicide prevention resources, Veteran’s Court, Be Connect, VA, VFW, and elder
resources. An update and a vote on the design and cost of handouts will be done at
the next meeting.
5. MEMBER COMMENTS/ANNOUNCEMENTS
a. Commissioner Dalpe attend Navy Week and shared an update on the U.S.S.
Arizona. The city of Gilbert will be sponsoring the boat which has an expected
launch date of 2026. The city of Chandler will assist Gilbert as needed.
6. SCHEDULED/UNSCHEDULED PUBLIC APPEARANCES
a. Kayla Black, Operation Thrive
Mrs. Black introduced herself and her business which aids veterans using physical
therapy. Ms. Black expressed a desire to work with the Commission and would like
to be included on an upcoming agenda to speak in more detail.
7. CALENDAR ITEMS
a. The next meeting will be April 9, at 5:00 p.m.
8. ADJOURNMENT
With no further items, Chair Farabee adjourned the meeting at 5:33 p.m.
