MINUTES OF THE CHANDLER ARTS COMMISSION MEETING TUESDAY, APRIL 16, 2024 5:00 PM Commissioners Present: Michelle Hirsch, Shachi Kale, Rosanna Lantigua, Tim Wiant, Julie Ray, Mahfam Moeeni-Alarcon, Caitlin Penny Commissioners Absent: Staff Present: Peter Bugg, Caroline Hudson-Naef, Kim Moyers CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order at 5:07 PM by Michelle Hirsch UNSCHEDULED /SCHEDULED PUBLIC APPEARANCES / CALL TO PUBLIC none APPROVAL OF MINUTES a) Shachi made the motion to approve the minutes from March 19, 2024. Rosanna seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. ACTION AGENDA a) City Hall Banners Peter shared that the banners around City Hall, which were installed in 2019, are starting to fade and show damage. He proposed that they could be replaced with the extra funding from this fiscal year; due to the timeline necessary, the commission would select an artist from previous pools of applicants. Peter shared some options of artists, but after some discussion, the consensus was that the commissioners wanted to have more time to consider. Michelle Hirsch made a motion to table this item until the next meeting. Rosanna seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. BRIEFING ITEMS a) Public Art Plan Peter reminded the commissioners that they will review the Public Art Plan in May. b) Ongoing public art projects Michelle Hirsch shared about the fire department reception, for Nick Rascona’s sculpture, which was informal, but a nice gathering between Arts and Fire staff, as well as community members. Peter shared that three more box wraps were installed today at ACP, which completes that project for this year. He added that designs have been submitted for the two replacement box wraps in the Galveston neighborhood, and that all four will be installed in June. Staff hosted a reception for the Community Artists in Schools exhibit recently. Julie shared that all 5 artists attended, as well as many of the families who had participated. Peter added that attendance was about 115 people, including Mayor and Councilmember Orlando. Michelle Hirsch said that feedback from Kyrene teachers and principals has been very good and suggested a virtual exhibition could be a possibility in the future. Peter attended a meeting for the Tumbleweed project with the artist, building team and city staff. The design is in progress to account for building needs, specifically the placement of the shades. c) Outside Public Art Projects DCCP wants to do 2 more box wraps this year with the extra money in their budget. d) Maintenance projects After almost 2 years, Peter will be picking up the remaining replacement fins for the shade structure this week. Peter hopes they will be installed soon. Peter has not made any progress on the Oregon St parking garage “Sun Slides” signage but will try to have an update to share at the next meeting. MEMBERS COMMENTS / ANNOUNCEMENTS Shachi shared about her fun art project on display in Tempe through the end of April, which projects her artwork from stationary bikes when they are ridden. Michelle Hirsch shared that this meeting will be the last in her six-year tenure on the Arts Commission. She expressed gratitude about learning how public art works and being able to meet many talented artists, and looks forward to staying active with Chandler’s art events. She has loved collaborating with past and present Arts Commisisoners and is constantly impressed by the hard work staff performs to support the arts in this community. Several other commissioners shared their thanks for Michelle and her leadership. Rosanna and Tim shared about the opening for Cruising: The Lowrider Art Exhibit, which drew over 1,000 attendees. They mentioned that it was great to see so many people excited about attending their first event with Vision Gallery. CALENDAR a. Next regular meeting will be May 21, 2024 via webex.
