Meeting Minutes Human Relations Commission Regular Meeting April 17, 2024 | 6:00 p.m. Chandler City Council Chambers 88 E. Discussion Commissioner Farewell Chair Maxwell thanked Commissioner Jacob Bello for his dedicated service and unwavering commitment to the Human Relations Commission. As Bello transitions to a full-time Police Officer role with the City of Page 2 of 2 Chandler, his departure marks the end of a significant chapter for the Commission. Chair Maxwell acknowledged Bello's contributions and his positive impact, wishing him success and fulfillment in his new position. HRC Event Reports Chair Maxwell expressed her gratitude to the members for submitting post-event reports, emphasizing the value of their feedback. She highlighted the positive impact of the MLK Jr. Awards on the community awardees and praised the event's speaker for being relatable and enlightening, offering an important opportunity to learn about the significance of Martin Luther King Jr. Maxwell encouraged members to continue attending future events and sharing their insights, as this feedback is crucial for the Commission's ongoing efforts to foster community engagement and improvement. AACC Event Niki Tapia extended an invitation to all Commissioners to attend the Asian American Community Connection event, presented by DEI. Scheduled for May 1 at Phoenix Palace, the event will feature speakers from the Asian Chamber of Commerce, Public Safety, Fair Housing and Homeless Programs, and Arizona State University. This event is part of the celebration of AAPI Heritage Month, aiming to highlight and honor the contributions of the Asian community. Police Updates Police Commander Daniel Shellum has been appointed as the police liaison to the Human Relations Commission. With 18 years of experience at the Chandler Police Department, Commander Shellum brings a wealth of expertise in public safety, particularly in intelligence crime and gun violence. In his recent report, he noted that as of April 16, there have been no hate crimes. He also mentioned a protest at Intel West Campus, which concluded without any arrests or injuries. However, there has been a noticeable rise in traffic-related issues, which the department is actively addressing.
