MINUTES OF THE CHANDLER ARTS COMMISSION MEETING TUESDAY, JUNE 18, 2024 5:00 PM Commissioners Present: Shachi Kale, Rosanna Lantigua, Tim Wiant, Julie Ray, Mahfam Moeeni-Alarcon, Caitlin Penny, Darrell Dick Commissioners Absent: none Staff Present: Peter Bugg, Caroline Hudson-Naef CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order at 5:00 PM by Julie Ray UNSCHEDULED /SCHEDULED PUBLIC APPEARANCES / CALL TO PUBLIC Peter presented Michelle Hirsch with a plaque thanking her for her six years of service to the Arts Commission. Michelle let the commission know how much she enjoyed working with everyone and looks forward to attending future events. APPROVAL OF MINUTES a) Shachi made the motion to approve the minutes from May 21, 2024. Darrell seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. ACTION AGENDA a) Select teaching artists for the 2024-2025 school year. After discussion, Caitlin made a motion to select Memory Bradley, Dakota Drake, Such Styles, and Kelsey Phillips to teach in CUSD and Kyrene schools in the upcoming year. Rosanna seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. b) Approve RFQ for vinyl wrap projects. The commission reviewed the RFQ and requested minor changes to clarify details. Tim made a motion to approve the RFQ as amended. Caitlin seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. c) Approve RFQ for Gazelle Meadows Park signage Peter shared a new RFQ for signage in Gazelle Meadows park. Commissioners felt the description was unclear and made many suggestions to improve the RFQ, including a new photograph. After this discussion, Rosanna made a motion to approve the RFQ with amendments. Shachi seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. BRIEFING ITEMS a) Ongoing public art projects Peter shared that the Galveston Traffic boxes will be installed on June 19. The arts commissioners look forward to seeing photographs. Peter shared that Meg Stapp accepted the job of designing new banners for City Hall. She has received a down payment, and the project should be finished by the end of August. Peter shared the updated design progress for the Tumbleweed Recreation Center project. The artists at coLAB studio assured Peter that their structural engineer was calculating to make sure the project would not break under extreme weather conditions. b) External Public Art Projects Peter shared that the Mayor is interested in doing a project near the Goodyear Canal in South Chandler. Mayor Hartke has allotted funding, and Peter has begun to research possible locations. The mayor also requested the project be finished by the end of the calendar year. Due to the short timeline and external funding, Peter suggested directly selecting Bobby Zokaites, who has significant experience around the valley and has been a finalist for 4 projects in Chandler, but has never been selected. The arts commission did not see any issue with this. Peter will reach out to Bobby and share designs at the August meeting. Peter shared with the commissioners that arts staff plan to do a mural with external funding from a City Council Amendment this year and will have an RFQ ready to review by our meeting in August. MEMBERS COMMENTS / ANNOUNCEMENTS Mahfam shared about her new business, a wine shop called Spin the Bottle, which is now open in Downtown Chandler. Caroline looks forward to travelling to Poland for a month beginning tomorrow. CALENDAR Next regular meeting will be August 20, 2024 in person.
