Its overall focus will be on the history of Chandler’s culture of innovation and will celebrate and honor this history of innovation and the people who have contributed to it. Dr. Chandler’s almost unceasing drive for the next “big thing” drove him to constantly seek new innovations: in land development, water control, sources of water, ranching, agriculture, fruit production, solar power, tourism, finance, architecture, community development, and the list goes on. Dr. Chandler created a culture of innovation driven by opportunity. Countless others, from all walks of life, have continued that legacy in Chandler and continually make it the “Community of innovation” it is today. The Ranch at Tumbleweed Park is the place to celebrate and honor this history of innovation and the people who have made it. Background & History The Ranch at Tumbleweed Park is comprised of 19 acres in the southeast corner of Tumbleweed Park, 2205 S. McQueen Road, Chandler, AZ. The Ranch was originally developed in the early 2000s and features four historic structures, a small stage and amphitheater, deomonstration agricultural fields, and antique agricultural equipment displays. The Ranch is currently managed by the Chandler Museum, a division within the Cultural Development Department of the City of Chandler. The City of Chandler Parks Department maintains the physical grounds. Orignally conceived as the City’s main interpretive space for Chandler’s agricultural and foodways heritage, the Ranch grew into the main location for Chandler Museum’s school field trip program and the Museum’s signature special event, the annual Chandler Chuck Wagon Cook-off. In the past, additional community special events also occur t the Ranch including the Ostrich Festival and several high school cross-country track meets. The Ranch is open daily for recreational visitors and has become a popular location for professional photographers to shoot outdoor portraits. The Ranch is also used by outside non-profit organizations includign the Future Farmers of America and Weeders Gardening Club. Over the past 25 years, there have been multiple studies and master plans completed for The Ranch at Tumbleweed Park including the following: • Public History Master Plan, 1999 • Tumbleweed Ranch Program Plan, 2000 • Edwards House Building Assessment Report, 2005 • the Ranch at Tumbleweed Park Master Plan, 2006 • Additional Mapping of Triangular Garden Area, 2013 Master Plan for The Ranch at Tumbleweed Park Project Summary City of Chandler | 03 Master Plan for The Ranch at Tumbleweed Park Proposed Master Plan Improvements The Ranch at Tumbleweed Park is planned to have a multi-phased improvement plan to create a vibrant cultural destination that supports daily activity for Chandler residents as well as special events. Proposed Master Plan improvements will include the following: General Site Improvements: • Create a prominent new site entrance at The Ranch and an impmroved public face on Centennial Parkway. • Develop a tree master plan for the entire 19 acre site to create shady activity zones and provide opportunities to interpret Chandler’s fruit crop history. • Expand parking capacity to support daily programming and special events. The Water Promenande: A redesigned interpretation of the importance of water and canals to Chandler’s history along the existing canals. • Featuring a public art piece and water feature that represents a dredge that created the water infrastructure and the ever-important canals that deliver this creitical natural resource. • A space to interpret Chandler’s environmental history, and the innovatins of today and water’s future. • Feature interpretation about the recharge wells on site and their role in ensuring that the water aquafer stays healthy. • A shady promenade that welcoms visitors to The Ranch. History Path: An interpretive pathway with redesigned historical kiosks featuring severl of Chandler’s innovators, cultural groups, important places, and events. • This History Path will be the central hub of a completely redesigned and redeveloped historical kiosk program that will ultimately include kiosks in every one of Chandler’s 78 parks that will become Chandler’s History Trail. Historic Structures: Restoration of four historic structures so that they can be open to the public on a regular basis including enhanced interpretation of historic structures. Twin Barns: Redesign area including two new barn structures to support daily programming and support special events. • Shady area for family picnics, daily programming, and community gatherings. • A relocated and redesigned Red Shed amphitheater to support educational programs and small events. • Dedicated event area for signature event, the Chandler Chuck Wagon Cook-off. • Space designed to be able to support private events such as weddings or family reunions. Adventure Play: Develop a new adventure play area for families featuring a signature tree house, interpretive play, and interactive water features. The Innovation Shed: Build a new large interpretive building to house large farm equipment pieces and interpret Chandler’s agricultural history and be a mix of indoor and outdoor spaces. • This new interpretive buildign will also allow for changing and rotational exhibitions on Chandler’s innovators and other areas of Chandler history. The Barn: Build a new large barn structure to house a state of the art special event area. • Flexible structure designed to support a wide range of programs including farmers market, arts & cultural festivals, outdoor movies, and small concerts. The Citrus Camp: Develop citrus orchard along with newly recreated historic structures that are open to the public and support daily programming. The Farm: Demonstration agricultural fields located on the eastern portion of the site. Includes the ability to support community gardening education programs. Proposed project phasing is as follows: FY 2023 - 2024: Funded design costs for Zone B - The Water Promenade, Zone D - The Twin Barns, Zone E - The Treehouse / Adventure Play, and General Site Improvements to include grading, planting of trees, and a pedestrian pathway with historical interpretive signage.
