Meeting Minutes Mayor’s Youth Commission Regular Meeting August 13, 2024, 5:00 p.m. Chandler Police Department, Main Station Community Room 250 E. Unscheduled Public Appearances Joseph Yang - Candidate for Chandler City Council, 303 E. Tremaine Dr., Chandler, AZ 85225 Joseph Yang introduced himself to the commission and thanked them for their service as commission members. He wished them a productive year ahead and a good meeting. Action Agenda 1. Approval of Minutes Approval of the April 9, 2024 Mayor’s Youth Commission minutes. Action Agenda Motion and Vote COMMISSIONER Sanjana Balaji moved to approve the April 9, 2024 Mayor’s Youth Commission meeting minutes. Seconded by COMMISSIONER Mackenzie Cole. Motion carried unanimously (18-0-1). Discussion 2. Mayor Hartke’s Welcome Chair Singhania welcomes Mayor Hartke. Mayor Hartke introduced himself and talked to the commissioners about exploring new opportunities and advocating for youth issues in Chandler. He encouraged them to be leaders in their schools and spread awareness about civic engagement and mental health. He then took questions from the commission. 3. Group Introductions Chair Singhania begins group introductions. The commission went around the room saying their name, grade, school, how many years they served in the commission, and their favorite candy. 4. Icebreakers Vice-Chair Lee introduced Bingo where commissioners asked each other personal facts about each other relating to Chandler. 5. Mayor’s Youth Commission Expectations, 2025 Schedule and Engagement Opportunities – Alexis Apodaca, Staff Liaison Page 2 of 4 Alexis Apodaca reviewed the 2024 MYC Commissioner expectation sheet. MYC Commissioners must follow expectations for meeting dates and events, including participating in at least four external events. Alexis also introduced the 2024-2025 MYC schedule. The biggest change from previous years is location of the meetings, which will now be held in the Community Room of the Chandler Police Department. Returning MYC commissioners signed an agreement to fulfill their duties as part of this commission. 6. League of Arizona Cities and Towns Youth Conference – August 28, 2024 Alexis and Chair Singhania discussed the upcoming League Conference, which is MYC's first professional development opportunity. It is scheduled for August 28th, 2024, for the whole day. Due to the limited space, six of the commissioners will represent MYC at this event. At this conference, the commissioners will experience professional development opportunities, meet other youth commissions, talk with Chandler Mayor and Council and participate in team building activities. 7. Town of Florence Teen Leadership Symposium – September 13, 2024, 10am – 3pm Alexis explained the Town of Florence Symposium, which is a new event for MYC this year. It will be on September 13th, 2024. This opportunity will be given first priority to commissioners who are not going to the League Conference. At the symposium, attendees will be able to hear from leadership experts and learn how leadership principles are applied in real-world scenarios. 8. City of Chandler Sponsorship Funding Program Panel Representative – September 17, 2023, 5pm – 8pm Chair Singhania presents the role of a panel representative for the MYC in the City of Chandler Sponsorship Funding Program. He shareed insights from his experience last year, emphasizing the chance to learn from experienced panel members and to represent youth interests. The panel focuses on the allocation of funds to various nonprofits and organizations. Commissioner Sanjana Balaji was selected as this year's panel representative through a random draw. 9. Parade of Lights Judging – December 7, 2024, 5pm Alexis provided details on judging for Parade of Lights, which will be on December 7th, 2024. Only MYC high school seniors will be eligible to serve as judges. During the parade, they will evaluate the parade floats and select the best one based on creative design, craftsmanship, impact, and other factors. Member Comments/Announcements None.
