Meeting Minutes Mayor’s Youth Commission Regular Meeting September 10, 2024, 5:00 p.m. Chandler Police Department, Main Station Community Room 250 E. Unscheduled Public Appearances None. Action Agenda 1. Approval of Minutes Approval of the August 9, 2024 Mayor’s Youth Commission minutes. Action Agenda Motion and Vote COMMISSIONER Elizabeth Ovelil moved to approve the August 13, 2024 Mayor’s Youth Commission meeting minutes. Seconded by COMMISSIONER Shripal Dupati. Motion carried unanimously (15-0-4). Discussion 2. League of Arizona Cities and Towns Debrief Commissioners who participated in the League of Arizona Cities and Towns Conference were asked to share their experiences. Commissioner Dupati described the focus on smaller cities and the value of discussing teen issues in Chandler directly with the Mayor and Council. He found these one-on-one conversations to be the highlight of the event. Vice-Chair Lee also added that the trivia session with the Mayor and Council was enjoyable and lively. 3. Town of Florence Teen Leadership Symposium Update Chair Singhania introduced the Town of Florence Teen Leadership Symposium, which will take place on Friday, September 13th. Alexis Apodaca emphasized the symposium as a professional development opportunity. Alexis updated that four commissioners had registered to attend. She reminded commissioners that it would be an hour's drive to Florence and the event would run from 10 AM to 3 PM. Commissioners are scheduled to meet at City Hall at 9:30 AM and will wear their official polos for the event. Page 2 of 4 4. Chandler City Council Meeting Opportunity – October 13, 5:45pm Chair Singhania introduced the opportunity to attend a Chandler City Council meeting. Alexis outlined the meeting schedule, where Commissioners should meet outside the Council Chambers at 5:45 PM, and be prepared for the meeting to start at 6 PM. She reminded the commissioners that they are expected to stay for the duration of the meeting to observe how the council operates. 5. 2025 Teen Leadership Academy Chair Singhania introduced the planning session for the Teen Leadership Academy (TLA), recapping last year's themes of civic engagement, substance abuse, and mental health, and discussing the format for the upcoming session. The commissioners opted for a one-day format for the TLA, scheduled for March 14th. During the brainstorming segment, they considered various new topics, such as the impact of social media on mental health, the role of AI in education, and more. Ultimately, the group decided to focus on three main areas: mental health, civic engagement, and youth policies for the next TLA. To facilitate engagement, they also planned to incorporate icebreakers into the session. Briefing 6. City Government 101 Alexis led a session aimed at educating the commissioners about Chandler's municipal government structure. She introduced the Mayor, Council, and city manager’s office leadership, explaining their roles and the appointment process. The session included an interactive component where commissioners were tasked to research and report on different city departments. Member Comments/Announcements None.
