Meeting Minutes Military and Veterans Affairs Commission Regular Meeting September 10, 2024 | 5:00 p.m. Council Chambers Conference Room 88 E. Chicago St., Chandler, AZ Call to Order The meeting was called to order by Chair Farabee at 5:01 p.m. Roll Call Commission Attendance Chair Carol Farabee Vice Chair Michael Simon Commissioner Robert Dalpe Commissioner Jacob Dort Commissioner Nancy Dunn Commissioner Shane Levinson Commissioner LaShay Marks Staff Attendance Corey Povar, Staff Liaison Tawn Kao, Assistant City Attorney Luke Tasker, Recording Secretary Absent Consent Agenda 1. August 2024 Military and Veterans Affairs Commission Meeting Minutes Comm. Levinson motioned to approve the consent agenda; seconded by Comm. Dalpe. Motion carried 7-0. Discussion 2. Discuss updates regarding 2024 Military and Veterans Affairs Commission retreat Page 2 of 3 Mr. Tasker advised that the meeting room at the museum has been reserved, and that Ms. Chepelsky would be available to facilitate again. Discussion ensued regarding combining the retreat with December’s regular meeting, and will be placed on the consent agenda for approval at the October meeting. 3. Discuss updates regarding Veteran Resource brochure Discussion ensued regarding the use of QR codes on the brochure, with a consensus that it would be better to have all links centralized on the Commission’s website. 4. Discuss updates regarding memorial for the 50th anniversary of the fall of Saigon, to be held April 26, 2025 Mr. Povar and Chair Farabee gave an update on a recent planning meeting they attended. The community members intend to have Vietnamese food, art displays, other cultural exhibits at the event, as well as speakers. There was discussion of designing a challenge coin for the event and locating sponsors. Comm. Dalpe advised that he would reach out to Medal of Honor recipient Bruce Crandall to see if he would be interested in speaking. Comm. Dalpe also suggested reaching out to the Arizona Chapter of the Vietnam Veterans of America. 5. Discuss updates regarding the Veterans Day event, to be held November 11, 2024 Comm. Dalpe suggested reaching out to Purple Heart recipient Charles Byers to see if he would be interested in speaking. Chair Farabee advised that she would contact Mr. Byers. 6. Discuss updates regarding external events Comm. Dalpe advised that the For Our City kickoff event will be held on October 19 from 7 – 10 a.m. at 50 S McQueen Rd; the main For Our City event will be held March 29, 2025. Mr. Povar advised that Mr. Groth had inquired if there had been any progress locating a sponsor for the Military Appreciation Breakfast; Comm. Dalpe advised that he would contact a potential sponsor. Comm. Dort asked what documentation was in place for the Commission’s events, to preserve best practices and contacts for future Commission members. Comm. Dalpe advised that there was nothing written currently; Comm. Levinson suggested that it would be a good agenda item for the planning retreat. Chair Farabee also requested that reports for Council be added as an agenda item for the retreat. Page 3 of 3 Member Comments/Announcements Comm. Dalpe advised that Glendale’s Stand Up for Veterans event would be taking place on October 25, 2024 from 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. at 1 Firestorm Way. He also advised that the Veterans Medical Leadership Council would be holding a luncheon honoring WWII veterans on November 7, 2024 at Falcon Field Airport in Mesa. Calendar 7. The next Military and Veterans Affairs Commission meeting will be held October 8,2024 at 5:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers Conference Room, 88 E. Chicago St. Information Items 8. Treasury Report - Luke Tasker, Commission Secretary Mr. Tasker advised that there were no changes. 9. Update on the City's Constitution Day event, to be held September 17, 2024 from 8:30 - 9:30 a.m. at the City Hall Courtyard - Corey Povar, Staff Liaison Chair Farabee inquired if the Commission’s tent would be set up. Mr. Povar advised that it would, and that brochures could be made available as well.
