Meeting Minutes Mayor’s Youth Commission Regular Meeting October 8, 2024, 5:00 p.m. Chandler Development Services Department South Atrium 215 E. Action Agenda Motion and Vote COMMISSIONER Sanjana Balaji moved to approve the September 10, 2024 Mayor’s Youth Commission meeting minutes. Seconded by COMMISSIONER Shripal Dupati. Motion carried unanimously (13-0-6). COMMISSIONER Sanjana Balaji moved to approve the 2025 Mayor’s Youth Commission Regular Schedule. Seconded by COMMISSIONER Abhiram Kumar. Motion carried unanimously (13-0-6). Briefing 3. Tour of Traffic Management Center Commissioners were introduced to the operational mechanisms of the Traffic Management Center. Alicia Doll, Signal Systems Engineer, and her team explained their daily lives as engineers who manage traffic signal controls and detailed their collaboration with the city, including how citizens can report issues for Page 2 of 4 resolution. Commissioners engaged actively, posing several questions to further understand the aspects of traffic management. 4. Overview of Transportation Policy – Nancy Jackson, Transportation Planning Program Coordinator Chair Singhania introduced Nancy Jackson from the Transportation Policy Division. Jackson oversees public transportation services, focusing on accessibility for people with disabilities, and manages local and express bus services along with specialized programs like paratransit and rideshare. She highlighted the First-Mile, Last-Mile partnership with Lyft and discussed the Chandler Flex service, soliciting feedback on how to enhance the service for youth. Jackson also mentioned potential policy changes and asked commissioners for feedback. Various commissioners suggested improvements to the service model, including adjustments to the fee structure and increased vehicle availability near schools. 5. Downtown Region Area Plan Update Workshop Chair Singhania introduced Alisa Petterson, Senior Planner, who presented the Downtown Region Workshop, alongside a consultant focusing on outreach for the project. The workshop outlined the purpose of the area plan: to assess changes in the region, envision future developments, and guide city planning efforts more accurately. The project, initiated in February 2024, is still in progress with a dedicated website listing workshop dates and contact information. Petterson described the plan area, which includes five main districts, aiming to align specific district aspirations with the broader community vision. Various commissioners engaged in the discussion, exploring potential service improvements and sharing their perspectives on the Chandler Downtown Region. 6. Town of Florence Teen Leadership Symposium Debrief Commissioners who attended the symposium were asked to share their experiences. Commissioner Lu shared that the symposium focused on important themes of teen leadership, such as perseverance. He highlighted that the discussions were insightful to understanding leadership qualities among youth. Commissioner Garner also recounted participating in engaging activities, including taking photos and joining a scavenger hunt. 7. City of Chandler Sponsorship Funding Program Panel Debrief Commissioner Balaji provided a debrief on her engaging experience serving on the panel for the City of Chandler Sponsorship Funding Program. She spent three hours evaluating pitches from various businesses, engaging in discussions, and ultimately contributing to the decision to allocate significant funding to support local enterprises. 8. Chandler City Council Meeting Engagement Opportunity – Monday, October 14th, 5:45pm Chair Singhania reminded commissioners about the opportunity to attend the upcoming Chandler City Council meeting. Commissioners interested in attending must RSVP by October 13th and are expected to stay for the entire meeting. Page 3 of 4 9. Community Volunteering Opportunity – For Our City Day Kickoff Event – Saturday, October 19th 6:00am – 10:30am Chair Singhania introduced the kickoff event for For Our City Day. Alexis Apodaca, staff liaison provided further details. Commissioners have the opportunity to join the Mayor and City Council in making pancakes for volunteers. The event is expected to draw a couple of hundred volunteers and will serve as a preview for the main For Our City Day activities, which focus on neighborhood revitalization. 10. Community Volunteering Opportunity – Woofstock – Saturday, November 16th 8:30am –11:00am and 10:30am – 1:00pm Chair Singhania introduced another volunteering opportunity at the upcoming Woofstock event, Alexis shared that commissioners will have the enjoyable task of serving “puppucinos” to the community's dogs.
