Meeting Minutes Chandler Museum Foundation Regular Meeting May 19, 2025| 5:30 p.m. Chandler Museum, Saguaro Room 300 S. Chandler Village Drive, Chandler, AZ Call to Order The meeting was called to order by Barbara Meyerson at 5:30 p.m. Roll Call Board Member Attendance Staff Attendance Barbara Meyerson, Chair Jody Crago, Museum Manager Joan Clark, Vice-Chair Rich Feely, Treasurer Calvenea Malloy Jacki Ryan Joshua Askey Martin Sepulveda Mary Cimaglio Gregory Herriman Heather Patterson Devin Moreno Absent Susan Crabtree Shatavia Elder Unscheduled Public Appearances None. Consent Agenda 1. Approval of Minutes from April 21, 2025 Chandler Museum Foundation Board Meeting Page 2 of 6 • Martin Sepulveda made a motion to approve of minutes from April 21, 2025 Chandler Museum Foundation Board Meeting • Gregory Herriman seconded the motion. • Proposed changes: o Change Page 2, Line 35 “A+D” to “OA+D.” o Change Page 3, Line 19 “month” to “months.” o Change Page 3, Line 28-29 to include a specific number of oral histories that Sarah Biggerstaff conducted for the Basha exhibition project. • Motion carried unanimously (12-0). The minutes were approved with edits. Action Agenda 2. Recommend Presentation of Slate of Officers • Martin Sepulveda made a motion to present slate of officers. • Calvenea Malloy seconded the motion. • Joan Clark presented the recommended slate of officers o Barbara Meyerson should continue as Chair o Rich Feely should become Vice-Chair o Greg Herriman should become Treasurer • Motion carried unanimously (12-0). The recommendation was approved as presented. 3. Election of New Officers • Martin Sepulveda made a motion to elect new officers. • Jacki Ryan seconded the motion. • Motion carried unanimously (12-0). The recommendation was approved as presented. 4. Approve Fall Fundraising Approach • Jacki Ryan made a motion to approve fall fundraising approach. • Martin Sepulveda seconded the motion. • Jody Crago presented the fall fundraising approach to the Board. • Board members asked questions about timing, cost, capacity, staffing, and security. • Jacki Ryan explained that the event is intended to bring potential investors in and show them what the Chandler Museum does and potentially solicit donations. • Motion carried unanimously (12-0). The recommendation was approved as presented. 5. Name Fall Fundraising Chair and Committee • Calvenea Malloy made a motion to name fall fundraising chair and committee. • Martin Sepulveda seconded the motion. • Jacki Ryan was nominated and agreed to serve as they Chair of the Fundraising Subcommittee. Page 3 of 6 • Martin Sepulveda, Devin Moreno, Heather Patterson, and Calvenea Malloy volunteered to help with the Fundraising Subcommittee. • Motion carried unanimously (12-0). The recommendation was approved as presented. Discussion 6. Introductions for New Board Members • Board members went around and introduced themselves. 7. Present Fiscal Year 2025-2026 Proposed Budget • Rich Feely and Jody Crago presented proposed budget to the Board for review and discussion, focusing on major revenues and expenses. 8. Museum Manager’s Update • Chandler Museum Strategic Plan o In 2024, Chandler City Council funded $30,000 for a strategic plan for the Chandler Museum, with additional $15,000 provided by the Chandler Museum Foundation. o The Chandler Museum recently hired Keen Independent Consulting to create the strategic plan. o The first meeting is scheduled, and a steering group is being formed. o Keen will be evaluating Museum reports and speaking with the community to determine how the Museum can best serve the community. • Exhibits Update o ¡MONSTRAS! Female Legends of Latin America opened in the Exhibit Hall on April 26, 2025, and runs through August 31, 2025. o Pony Up! Cowgirls of Chandler opened in the Price Gallery on May 9, 2025, and closes on November 2, 2025. o The planned House of Broadcasting exhibition will not be opening in the fall, but an exhibition might happen in the spring of 2026. o After ¡MONSTRAS! closes, traveling exhibition The Newest Americans will open in the Exhibit Hall on September 30, 2025. • Tumbleweed Ranch Update o Two phases of construction for renovations are funded through 2026. o Design drawings are roughly 90% complete. Contracting for that will likely begin in the late fall of 2025. o In the 2026-2025 fiscal year, the Museum will receive an additional $4.3 million for phase 2 of the project, focusing on the Red Shed Theater and historic houses. Page 4 of 6 o The Museum will be seeking additional grant funding to help with this project. o The Tumbleweed Ranch Project was pulled from the upcoming bond election, so Phases 3-8 will probably not receive funding until 2033 at the earliest. • Chandler Sports Hall of Fame Kiosk o Touchscreen kiosk in the Chandler Museum hallway is functional after multiple years of work to make it so. The most recent 3 years of inductees are being added to the program. • Outreach Events o Caroline Hudson-Naef, Outreach Coordinator, has so far in 2025 attended 5 outreach events and has interacted with 622 people at these events. o Chandler Museum Board members will be contacted as new outreach events are scheduled so they can join Caroline. o The Marketing Workgroup has designed and almost completed a rack card design for the Foundation Briefing None. Member Comments 1. Joan Clark recommended for Board members to explore the newly renovated Tumbleweed Recreation Center. • Jody Crago pointed out that the Tumbleweed Recreation Center renovation was led by a recreation strategic plan that was conducted 5-7 years ago. • Jody Crago also shouted out Peter Bugg for his work on the new public art installation in front of the Tumbleweed Recreation Center 2. Rich Feely shared about the Chandler Boards and Commissions retreat and the City of Chandler strategic plan update process and the impact it may have on the Chandler Museum Foundation. 3. Jacki Ryan told the Board that she has already received word from a business she talked with that they would be donating to support the fall fundraising event, as well as attending the event. 4. Jacki Ryan shared about meeting a man at the American Legion who was born in and grew up in Chandler and showed her photos. 5. Board Members asked about what buildings from the Gila River Internment Camp still exist and Jody Crago shared that the Museum has a list and keeps an eye on the buildings that still survive with the hope of saving them in the future, should they be in danger of destruction. Page 5 of 6 • He also shared about the Museum’s ongoing oral history efforts to preserve the stories from the historic communities of the City of Chandler. 6. Jody Crago shared that Peter Bugg was unable to attend due to his mother-in-law's passing and asked for members to share a kind word with him when they are able. Member Announcements None.
