REGULAR MEETING MINUTES
CALL TO ORDER/ROLL CALL
Chair David called the meeting to order on Tuesday, September 2, at 5:00 p.m.

1. Approval of Minutes from August 5, 2025, Parks and Recreation Board Meeting.
Vice Chair Dykstra moved to approve the August 5th, 2025, Parks and
Recreation Board meeting minutes and Board Member
Krishnamurthy seconded.
The motion was approved unanimously, 5-0.
BRIEFING
2. Tumbleweed Recreation Programs and Participation – Abel Mendoza,
Recreation Supervisor
Mr. Abel Mendoza, Recreation Supervisor, briefed the Board on the
Tumbleweed Recreation Center programs and participation. Mr. Mendoza
shared statistics on leisure classes, recreation programs, fitness, rentals,
membership, and recreation staff and volunteers.
Vice Chair Dykstra asked how the numbers compared to last year and what
was the most popular event. Mr. Mendoza responded that the numbers are
up and that Polar Express is very well attended.
Boardmember McInturf asked about the cooling center at Tumbleweed and
if there were any plans to adjust the gym hours at the facility. Mr. Mendoza
responded that they still have the cooling center and that it was moved to
the main hallway and at this time there are no plans to change the facility
hours.
Vice Chair Dykstra asked how the expansion was going. Mr. Mendoza
shared that they had the opening which was well attended and that the
expansion created more space for programming, an upgrade to the Tree
House, and the creation of the Saguaro Social Club for active adults.
Vice Chair Dykstra asked what volunteers do at the center and are there
any plans to record and post the Lunch and Learn series. Mr. Mendoza
responded that there are approximately 120 volunteers, and they work on
the fitness floor, front desk, and complete various projects. He also
responded that the Saguaro Social Club is looking at how to publish the
Lunch and Learn series. There have been three afternoon and one evening
sessions in the last year.

Community Center, 125 E. Commonwealth Ave., Chandler, AZ 85225
7. Grandparents Day, September 27 from 9 – noon at the Senior Center, 202 E.
Boston St., Chandler AZ 85225. Registration required.
MEMBER COMMENTS/ANNOUNCEMENTS
Vice Chair Dykstra asked if Chandler was recognized at the APRA
conference. Becky Kuiper, Recreation Superintendent, responded for the
second year in a row the city received the Outstanding Youth Enrichment
award.
ADJOURN
Chair David moved to adjourn September 2nd Parks and Recreation Board
meeting, and Vice Chair Dykstra approved the motion and Board member
McInturf seconded. The meeting was adjourned at 5:25 p.m.
