Informational Memo Community Services Department - Memo No. CS26-010 Date: November 4, 2025 To: Parks and Recreation Board Thru: John Sefton, Community Services Director Corey Povar, Assistant Director – Parks and Recreation From: Erika Berry, Recreation Superintendent EMB Subject: Tumbleweed Recreation Center Participation Comparison During the Parks and Recreation Board meeting on October 7, 2025, board member Jim Montgomery requested information about participation, programs, and staffing at Tumbleweed Recreation Center (TRC) in regard to the construction and opening of the expansion project. Background Built in 2007, the Tumbleweed Recreation Center (TRC) is a multigenerational facility serving customers of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities. In response to Chandler’s growing population and increased interest in recreational opportunities, particularly among the senior population, the TRC underwent a sixteen-month expansion project to better meet community demand. Project Overview The expansion began in January 2024 and added 11,000 square feet to the east side of the existing building. To accommodate the expansion footprint, the Tree House (child watch) and Preschool rooms were demolished, and temporarily relocated, ensuring continuity of programming and minimal disruption to families. Upon completion both programs transitioned into newly renovated spaces within the main building. The 11,000 sq. ft. expansion includes: • A multipurpose room • Two classrooms • Art room • Fitness room • Book nook • Billiards and game areas • Guest services The project was completed in May 2025 and officially opened on May 19, 2025. The Tumbleweed Recreation Cener expansion demonstrates the city’s commitment to responsible facility planning and the continued delivery of quality community services. Despite the challenges of operating during construction, the team successfully minimized operational impacts while maintaining quality programs and activities. Our customers remained flexible and engaged throughout the process, finding value in their continued use of the TRC during this time. Attached is a three-year participation comparison detailing programs, participation, and staffing across TRC’s programs and services.
