Title of the Project
Gas Chromatograph/Mass Spectrometer (GCMS)
Amount Intended to Request
$187,047.25
Purpose of the Grant
To purchase a Gas Chromatograph/Mass Spectrometer (GCMS) to participate in the
Global Uniform Analysis and Reporting of Drug-related Substances (GUARDS).
Project Summary
The Forensic Services Section (FSS) would like to request $187,047.25 to enhance our
laboratory’s analytical capabilities and efficiency with the purchase of a Gas
Chromatograph/Mass Spectrometer (GCMS). This instrument would be used to
participate in the Global Uniform Analysis and Reporting of Drug-related Substances
(GUARDS), a standardized analysis and reporting methodology developed by the DEA.
Currently, local, state, and federal labs have some variation in how controlled
substances in low concentrations such as carfentanil and non-controlled substances like
xylazine (sometimes referred to as the “zombie drug”) are reported particularly when
mixed with drugs in high concentrations like heroin.
Having the instrumentation needed to participate in the GUARDS method will enhance
the detection of these drugs which leads to better service to local law enforcement and
ultimately our community. Our analysis of these drugs can contribute to a nationwide
understanding of drug trends. The information sharing that will grow out of our
participation in the GUARDS method will result in information sharing that will have a
positive impact on our community.
