MINUTES OF THE CHANDLER ARTS COMMISSION MEETING TUESDAY, January 20, 2026 5:00 PM Commissioners Present: Rosanna Lantigua, Darrell Dick, Shachi Kale, Liz Taylor, Mahfam Moeeni-Alarcon, Julie Ray Commissioners Absent: David Wilkinson Staff Present: Peter Bugg, Hanley Ange, Niki Tapia CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order at 5:03PM by Peter Bugg UNSCHEDULED /SCHEDULED PUBLIC APPEARANCES / CALL TO PUBLIC Niki Tapia, new Assistant Director of Cultural Development and Liz Taylor, new arts commissioner APPROVAL OF MINUTES a) Shachi made the motion to approve the minutes from November 18, 2025. Rosanna seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. ACTION AGENDA a. Approve designs for housing murals I. Peter reviewed the Villas on McQueen public housing mural project. Three artists were selected to participate in this project. A site visit happened in December, and designs have been in the works since then. Such Styles proposed a mural outdoors in a playground area within the housing community. Caylah Cole proposed a design for an interior wall in the housing development’s community room. Kraze is still working on a proposal for large walls in an interior courtyard. Rosanna asked for clarification on Such Styles’ mural location. Darrell motioned to approve the designs the artists submitted. Rosanna seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously. b. Approve objects for deaccessioning I. Peter shared photos of the two ostrich sculptures the commission is being asked to deaccession and gave some background on how they came to be. The ostriches are appreciated by the public, but they are difficult to care for and store so they should be relocated. Mahfam asked if they can be donated to a non-profit for fundraising. Peter answered that the priority is to have the ostriches in another public place or refitted to be public art, but the next option is they could be donated to a non-profit. Shachi motioned to deaccession the ostrich sculptures. Mahfam seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously. BRIEFING ITEMS a. Ongoing public art projects I. Traffic Boxes i. Peter gave background on this project to loop Liz into what this project is. This year’s project collaborates with ASU students who go in to the Chandler community to collect data on residents that is then handed over to the visual artists who create designs inspired by this information. Final projects will be installed on the boxes in March with an opening reception and tour in late March/early April. II. Goodyear Canal Project i. The mayor preferred Bobby Zokaites’ proposed sculpture but wanted some adjustments made. The proposed sculpture includes tire imagery, water, and wheat to represent the importance of the canal. Ostriches in the design will be likely be removed or replaced with icons of Chandler that speak to history and progression and the wheat will be edited slightly. III. Traffic Management Center i. Peter shared the design by Eli Richard that was approved with the most recent edits. No further progress has been made here. IV. Forensic Services i. Peter shared potential locations for artwork and that four designs will be shared next meeting. Two of these designs will be selected. b. Maintenance Projects I. Artwork on traffic control box on Arizona Ave and Frye Rd. was replaced and we were able to compensate the artist for adjusting their design for the new box shape. II. Public artwork in AJ Chandler park titled “Victor Hugo” was relocated during the renovation of the park. The park renovation should be done by December 2026. The artwork needs some maintenance during the relocation and it will likely be relocated somewhere at the Chandler Museum. Peter is doing research on how much it will cost to create a pedestal or pad for the artwork to live on. MEMBERS COMMENTS / ANNOUNCEMENTS Darrell asked if we have a map of public art projects and Peter shared that we have two physical maps available at Vision Gallery and one digital map available online.
