Program Information Summaries

HSD Division Collaboration
On May 2, a Head Start Birth to Five caseworker collaborated with a Community Service
and Initiative Division (CSID) caseworker from the Sunnyslope Family Services Center to
assist a Head Start family. They provided 320 adult diapers for a disabled household
member, and the family of eight expressed their gratitude.

On the same day, a caseworker from Head Start Birth to Five and a CSID caseworker
helped another family whose only car had caught fire. The mother was approved for
ongoing co-case management, receiving a monthly bus pass and assistance with her
electric bills. She was very thankful, as the bus pass would enable her to take her child
to Head Start and commute to work.

Parent Testimony
On May 6, a caseworker from the Head Start Birth to Five Program received a letter from
a parent of a child enrolled in the program at Fowler Elementary School District. In the
letter, the parent wrote, "Julian has improved his social skills. He can recognize shapes,
count, write his name, and identify the first letter of his name. Additionally, Julian has
shown the ability to understand and follow his teachers' instructions. The Head Start
program is amazing, and I thank you."

Fatherhood Canvas Luncheon
On May 10, staff from the Head Start Birth to Five Program’s M.A.N.C.A.V.E. program
collaborated with the Phoenix Families First Resource Center at the Goelet A.C. Beuf
Community Center. The event welcomed over 56 families who enjoyed various games,
socialized, and expressed their creativity through painting.

Mental Health Awareness Month
The Head Start Birth to Five Program celebrated Mental Health Awareness Month in May
by offering every child a children's book focused on social-emotional themes. Additionally,
the program provided parents with a tip sheet on ways to support their child's social and
emotional development at home.

Conscious Discipline Coaching
In May, twenty teachers and members of the mental health team participated in one-on-
one Conscious Discipline coaching sessions in their classrooms and a consultation
meeting led by a Certified Conscious Discipline Instructor. The consultation included
discussions about the instructor’s classroom visit, observations, and the implementation
of Conscious Discipline strategies. This initiative builds on the weeklong academy
attended by the teachers and mental health staff last summer.
