Head Start Building Study 
On January 12, fifteen preschool families at Charles Harris Elementary in the Cartwright 
Elementary School District ended their Buildings Study with a celebration. As part of the 
curriculum, children started the study in December by identifying various aspects of 
buildings, such as the shapes of windows, the height of buildings, and who uses buildings. 
Families were assigned to create buildings with items at home over the Winter Break. 
Children and their families presented their buildings during the celebration and discussed 
how they constructed them. 
 
Early Head Start Literacy Event 
On January 11, Early Head Start staff hosted Literacy Events at Alhambra Preschool 
Academy in Alhambra Elementary School District and Byron A. Barry Elementary in 
Cartwright Elementary School District. Twenty-four children and families participated in a 
story-time reading of The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Erica Carle, read by an Early Head 
Start Program Assistant. Following the story time, parents received information on the 
importance of early literacy, how to engage children with books using props, and following 
their children’s lead and interest in books. Each family had the opportunity to build their 
at-home library by selecting ten books to take home from a wide selection organized by 
development supporting their child’s age. At the end of the event, families received a 
small, wooded bookcase to create an at-home library.  
 
Princess In Me Women’s Wellness Affair 
On January 25, the Head Start Birth to Five Program held a special event for more than 
260 women at the Versalles Palace. The attendees listened to keynote speakers discuss 
disease prevention, managing stress, and the importance of self-care. Attendees tasted 
healthy foods and drinks and received the recipes to try at home. The University of 
Arizona Prevention Mobile Clinic provided 30 free health screenings, and more than 18 
health-related community agencies provided information and giveaways.  
 
Mexican American Political Association 
On January 24, Head Start Birth to Five staff attended the 2024 summit held at the 
Sheraton Phoenix Downtown as guests of Radio Compesina.  Along with more than 200 
Latino educators, they listened to speakers who provided data illustrating how Latino 
students are falling behind educationally and provided strategies to assist the students in 
overcoming barriers.
