Background Every year, millions of cases of foodborne illness and thousands of associated deaths occur in the United States. Much of this burden can be prevented with better science and prevention tools, including timely interviews of cases, collection of specimens, and education of the public. Outbreaks of infectious disease, including enteric diseases occur frequently in Arizona as well as nationally and require rapid response from public health staff to investigate and control the outbreak to prevent further illnesses. One of the most crucial steps is timely interviewing of cases to help identify the source of the outbreak and facilitate timely product recalls as well improve overall food safety. Every year Arizona sees on average 940 cases of Campylobacter, twenty-six (26) cases of E. coli, 1000 cases of Salmonella, and 435 cases of Shigella along with a variety of other enteric, vaccine preventable, vectorborne and zoonotic diseases that require interviews and follow-up interventions to prevent further spread of disease. Only about nine percent (9%) of Salmonella infections and only 10-15 percent of E. coli infections are linked to the sources that caused them. Having standardized interviews with individuals dedicated to doing the interviews as well as developing a standardized communication system for relaying abnormal findings can increase the chance that an interviewer will notice food consumption patterns that multiple interviewers may otherwise miss. Educating cases and developing prevention materials for the general public is also an important activity to prevent the spread of disease in communities. To address infectious diseases, Maricopa County Department of Public Health (MCDPH) will work with Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) to investigate infectious disease cases and perform surveillance activities, which will provide key insight on best practices for collecting quality data to analyze and identify sources of infection and outbreaks, to characterize the impact of disease, to conduct investigations, to cultivate public awareness of disease impact, to target prevention strategies, and to utilize related departmental and community resources. 2.
