I have had an opportunity to review the application for funds submitted by the County Attorney's Office
for 03 of 2017. You will note that they have included the spending from 01 and 02 and they have divided
that spending out by subcategories. This is in keeping with what we asked them to do. The expenditures,
as well as the Budget for Q3, appear to be in order. I recommend approval of the 03 budget.
I am in the process of reviewing more detailed audit and expenditure numbers for the last quarter and I
will update you once I have completed the audit process. I have also learned that the Maricopa County
Attorney's Office has gone through an audit performed by the State Auditor General relating to the
expenditure of RICO funds. I am told that the County Attorney's Office passed that audit with flying colors.
Although I have not seen the actual audit results, I have asked the County Attorneys' Office to share the
result of the audit with us when it becomes available. They said they would do so. By all appearances, it
seems that the County Attorney's Office is continuing to take their responsibilities seriously in spending
these funds responsibly.
Here are some things to consider when looking at the attaching budget.
• It only reflects 02 actual spending through the end of October, so the actual spending amounts
will be higher at the end of December (02).
• The RICO budget reflects an analysis of RICO spending over the last 3 years, and the last 3 years
of data included large, and sometimes unexpected, expenditures on investigations or technology.
