Total grant amount request 100,000 1 / 1 Tohono O’odham Nation – Heard Museum Proposal “NDN Now (Indian Now)” Proposal prepared for Tohono O’odham by the Heard Museum May 3, 2017 Project Overview: The Heard Msueum is requesting a $100,000 grant to create a new educational exhibition entitled NDN Now (Indian Now) opening in the Fall of 2018. NDN Now is an exhibition affirming the vibrancy of the 22 Native American nations of Arizona. ‘NDN’ is a shorthand term that many Native Americans use on social media to self-identify. NDN Now, will present the latest in 21st century Native art across the spectrum of creativity. Visual art, fashion, music, dance, jewelry, design, and craft will be presented in the context of larger themes, including Land, Community, Identity, Language, and Celebration. Amerian Indian art is underrepresented in most museums, and American Indian artist working in contemporary contexts are often even less visisble. This work of contemporary Native artists must be seen, celebrated, and supported. NDN Now will help fill this gap by advancing these key goals: To educate visitors, in particular youth and students, about the diversity, quality, beauty, and vitality of contemporary Native art; To facilitate the transference of knowledge about cultural and artistic practice through intergenerational and cross-cultural conversations; To share work that spans artists across North America, while highlighting artists and culture from the Southwest and Arizona’s 22 tribes; To showcase ways in which contemporary Native artists are embracing the power of art to move their communities and engage Native youth, and To challenge long-held, deeply entrenched concepts of Native people as mired in the traditions of past decades. This exhibition and the education and public programming connected to it will underscore a truth that has always existed regarding Native art: it is based upon a tradition of innovation. NDN Now will be installed in the museum’s 2,161 square-foot J. Steele Parker Gallery. While the exhibition’s overarching themes will be an unchanging part of this multi-year installation, the visual and kinetic art presented will change on an ongoing basis to ensure that visitors will always see the best of “Now.” 1 Heard Museum | 2301 North Central Avenue | Phoenix, Arizona 85004 Tohono O’odham Nation – Heard Museum Proposal Proposal Items: a) Explain the perceived need and explain how the proposal will address that need. This project speaks directly to two of the Tohono O’odham’s priority funding areas: Education and Economic Development. Education - NDN Now is designed to be a vibrant and multifaceted teaching exhibition that serves many communities, including: American Indian Artists: Through workshops with and for Native artists, the exhibition activities will encourage the intergenerational transference of artistic and cultural practices and the development of practical skills. Students and Educators: The development of a standards-based curriculum package focusing on the exhibition, paired with a heavy emphasis on exhibition tours for school groups and professional development opportunities for teachers. American Indian Youth: Educational and professional development opportunities for Native youth through the American Indian Student Guide program. General Public: Through the exhibition and public programming, NDN Now also seeks to educate the general public about contemporary Native arts and artists, and to promote the understanding that American Indians are not fixed in time and place, but that they are a vital and vibrant part of the nation today. Economic Development - The exhibition will play a critical role in the Heard Museum’s institutional efforts to help create economic and entrepreneurial opportunities for Native artists, and it will add to the museum’s general appeal as one of Arizona’s most important cultural destinations. American Indian Artists: The artistic and professional development workshops offered to Native artists through the exhibition development and during its multi-year installation will be designed to strengthen artists’ knowledge of their cultural or artistic practices, as well as to foster skills that further their entrepreneurial skills. Additionally, the public programming developed in conjunction with the museum will offer artists ongoing opportunities to showcase their work at the Heard Museum through sales and networking events. Tourism: The Heard Museum is one of Arizona’s leading cultural destinations for tourists and locals alike.
