Total grant amount request 25000 1 / 1 Tohono O'odham Nation Request for Proposal Health & Safety Perceived Need and how we will address the need: We believe our request falls in the priority areas of Health Care and Public Safety. Our food programs focus on the intersections between food insecurity and health. Food insecurity has been linked with adverse diet-related health outcomes in family members of all ages including children. Statistics show that those families living in poverty have a higher rate of medical expenses than those with higher incomes. We provide an average of 300 meals every evening to the homeless, unemployed and working poor in the Phoenix East Valley. Each night we have a City of Mesa off duty police officer for the security of our guests and volunteers. Our request is for $25,000 to supplement the acquisition of healthier foods and to go toward the costs of the off duty police officers. While we receive many donations of food, we often receive more foods that are high carbs like bread, pastries and desserts and fewer fruits, vegetables and protein. Population and who will benefit Paz de Cristo serves the poor and hungry in the East Valley. We average over 7,000 visits from 2,400 unique individuals per month from people looking for food, clothing and supportive services. We distribute an average of 300 evening meals each day. About 55% of our evening meal guests are homeless and the majority are unemployed. While most of these guests are single adults, there are many families that participate in our evening meal service. These guests and our volunteers all benefit from the security and safety provided by having police officers on-site during the evening meal service. Our supportive services help our guests engage in the broader community and include vouchers for Arizona I.D.’s and birth certificates, bus passes for medical appointments, showers, haircuts, as well as employment assistance. Demographics: • White: 55% • Hispanic: 29% • African American: 9% • Native American: 5% • Asian 2% Mission, Vision and Values: • Mission Statement: To feed, clothe, and empower the unemployed, under-employed and homeless in the East Valley. • Vision Statement: To empower our guests to reach their full potential by removing barriers to self-sufficiency. Paz de Cristo exists to help our guests achieve self-reliance, personal pride and self-respect leading to improved economic standing, respect for others, and citizenship participation. • Value Statement: We believe everyone is a child of God and deserves to treated with dignity and respect. Scope of Services: • Meal Service Program – Evening meals served on location, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
