Southwest Autism Research & Resource Center
Tohono O’odham Nation Proposal – JumpStart Online
Background & Perceived Need
Established in 1997 by two mothers of children with autism and the pediatrician, Southwest
Autism Research & Resource Center (SARRC) is the state’s leading and largest nonprofit serving
the autism community. Around the time SARRC was founded, the prevalence of an autism
diagnosis was 1 in 500; today it is 1 in 68. This growing number is especially worrisome in Arizona,
where the rate is 1 in 66 and considered one of the five states registering the nation’s highest
rates of autism. More children will be diagnosed with autism this year than with AIDS, diabetes
& cancer combined and autism is the fastest‐growing developmental disability in the U.S.
according to Autism Society of America.
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disability that can cause significant social,
communication and behavioral challenges. Signs of ASD begin during early childhood and
typically last throughout a person’s life. Although the presentation of ASD varies significantly
among individuals, it affects every age group and occurs in all ethnic and socioeconomic groups.
For many, the most obvious signs and symptoms of ASD tend to emerge between 2 and 3 years
of age. While there is no known cause for ASD, research shows the potential for progress for
children with ASD is very good with early intervention.
Established as SARRC’s flagship program in 2002, JumpStart® is a parent empowerment program
designed for families with children under the age of 6, who are at‐risk or recently diagnosed with
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). JumpStart consists of ten sessions (over six weeks) based on
the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) that incorporate professionally led discussions
in a structured classroom environment, direct observation of 1:1 intervention sessions and in‐
vivo parent training. While many programs educate parents about autism, and therapists
commonly work directly with children in clinical settings or their homes, few programs in Arizona
both educate parents and train them on how to use the same behavioral techniques that
therapists employ in clinical settings.
As of June 2017, JumpStart will begin offering a set of eight online eLearning modules titled
“JumpStart Online”. This programmatic option will add efficiencies for families who cannot afford
to travel and/or find it difficult logistically to attend in‐person sessions. The guided observation
and direct coaching component of the JumpStart will still be scheduled on‐site at SARRC, and
once validated, the platform will enhance our JumpStart service model and increase the number
of families served over time.
Beneficiaries
JumpStart serves as a family’s introduction to autism, its lifelong journey and evidence‐based
practices that support the development of their newly diagnosed child. It consists of an
educational series for parents designed to support families in crisis and clinical interventions for
children, primarily focusing on improving communication and reducing problem behaviors across
natural settings. Research shows if the signs of ASD are caught early, treatments and therapies
can help children develop much faster and produce better outcomes than those receiving
interventions later in life.

Parents are provided with an overview of the characteristics of ASD, information on how to
access state‐funded services, direction for coordinating their child’s treatment with service
providers, and an educational overview on ASD, Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and other
related evidence‐based therapies. Parents receive training via topic‐based discussion, guided
observation of individual child sessions and live coaching/feedback.
Clinical Interventions emphasize the teaching of social, communication, and cognitive skills based
on the principles of ABA including Pivotal Response Treatment (PRT), Discrete Trial Training (DTT),
and Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS). JumpStart is also offered in Spanish,
specifically serving the needs of at least 12 monolingual Spanish‐speaking families each year.
Expected outcomes include having 78 children improve language and social skills, increase
communication responses, and overcome challenging behaviors, while 140 parents/caregivers
gain an understanding of ASD and ABA to better cope with their child’s disorder and enhance
their development.
Funding Request
SARRC is requesting $25,000 in grant funds from the Tohono O’odham Nation under the 2017
priority areas of Education & Health Care. Funding will support ongoing programmatic operation
of SARRC’s flagship program and advancement of its newly developed online, eLearning series in
order to serve more families, including those living in rural/remote areas of the state.

our program teaching parents how to implement evidence‐based strategies that support and
teach their child with ASD within their family life and natural routines.
