VALLEYLIFE PROPOSAL
May 2017
a. Need
VALLEYLIFE is requesting $50,000 toward Phase 2 of a solar installation on our
campus. In addition to our commitment to decreasing our carbon footprint on the
environment, we are seeking increased funding to meet the needs of our members not
covered by state funding, such as dental care, speech therapy, physical therapy and
related equipment. The savings from the total installation will be $21,000 a year, which
will go directly towards member needs.
Phase 1 of the project has been completed and will be operative in a few weeks. Phase
2 will complete the installation of the full number of panels needed to produce an
additional 60 kilowatt hours of electricity.
We feel that the environmental impact of utilizing solar energy is assuming our individual
responsibility of meeting the Arizona Renewable Portfolio Standard that calls for 15%
renewable energy by 2025. VALLEYLIFE is committed to implementing as many energy
efficient programs as possible. Currently 16 of our group homes have solar water
heaters; double paned windows have been added to 15 of our group homes; high
intensity lighting both indoors and out, as well as high-seer-rated A/C units, on our main
campus.
b. Population Benefitting
VALLEYLIFE serves a diverse range of individuals with disabilities through our 25 group
homes, 11 day activity centers, vocational program and home-based services.
Disabilities include mild to profound mental disabilities, neurological disorders, traumatic
brain injury, mental illness, behavioral disorders and severe physical and sensory
impairments. Members also present other conditions such as cerebral palsy, Down’s
syndrome, ADHD and autism.
A total of 500 members are provided with services. Over 200 non-duplicated members
and staff utilize our main campus on a daily basis and will be directly affected by the
solar project.
