Maricopa County once again was recognized and received an award for Combat Wounded Veterans by the Arizona Military Order of the Purple Heart for understanding Veteran’s needs. He then shared his personal experiences with Veterans, especially those currently serving in the Air Force at Luke Air Force Base. Mr. Moseley introduced the keynote speaker, Bill Montgomery, County Attorney noting he is a West Point graduate and a decorated Gulf War veteran. Bill Montgomery, County Attorney and Veteran, gave recognition to the men and women who serve and have served in the Armed forces. He paraphrased the following quote by General George Washington, “the willingness with which our young people are likely to serve in any war no matter how justified shall be directly proportional to how they perceive veterans of earlier wars were treated and appreciated by our nation.” Mr. Montgomery spoke of his military career and said Veterans Day is an opportunity to thank the men and women for willingly wearing the uniform of our country. They wear the uniform not in pursuit of fame or glory but because of a sacred call to stand for something greater than one’s self. They come from every walk of life with a shared purpose and resolve. America will never fall as long as they are on watch. We owe them a debt that can never be repaid for standing tall and firm while we go about our regular life. We must do our best to preserve and protect what they willingly fight for, our freedom. Mr. Montgomery stated the recent election is an example of what we may see as ordinary yet is a peaceful transition of power that is unique and continues to be unique because of the men and women that put the uniform on to serve, protect and preserve the Constitution of the United States. September 17, 2017 will be the celebration of 230 years of the longest standing written constitution. He noted the 25th anniversary of the Gulf War, expressed his gratitude to those currently serving as well as those returning from service and encouraged others to share their gratitude. Mr. Montgomery reflected on his deployment experiences: how American flags lined the path while convoying equipment; how there was always food, water and gratitude at each stop; and how many of those gracious individuals were Vietnam veterans who wanted to show their support as they did not receive the proper support upon their deployment or arrival. He stated it was an honor to serve and he is thankful for the opportunities given him. He thanked the County for recognizing and supporting Veterans. Mr. Moseley directed everyone to watch a video which highlighted County employees who are Veterans. Stephany Gallegos is a United States Army Veteran. Ms. Gallegos works in the Animal Care and Control department and is responsible for complaints, animal cruelty investigations, dog bites, and animal attacks. As a Veteran and County employee she is still protecting and serving. Shareef Muhammad is a United States Air Force Veteran who works as a Drug Court Counselor. He joined the Air Force because he wanted to serve and be a part of the military. As a County employee he changes lives by giving people the chance to be productive citizens. He served the first 14 years on active duty and then joined the Air Force Reserves. He stated he planned to retire in June 2017 with a total of 32 years of service. Colonel Gallegos has deployed ten times: seven Iraq deployments, two Afghanistan deployments, and one Bosnia Conflict tour. He knows the sacrifice Veterans have given and indicated he has the greatest job of training airmen in the greatest country. Colonel Gallegos concluded his remarks by asking some questions. What is Veterans Day? What is a Veteran? Colonel Gallegos said a Veteran is someone in uniform, professions who have served for their country on land, air or water. Professions and first responders are the people who put on the uniform for a job that asks you to sacrifice your life. He stated that the military is currently an all-volunteer force. Who is a Veteran? It’s the people in uniform and the individuals who have served in World War II, Vietnam War, Korean War and the War we continue to fight. He spoke of the events of September 11, 2001 and his experience as mission commander after that date. He noted that Luke Air Force Base has 144 fighter aircrafts and is currently the training hub for the United States and partner Nations such as Japan, Austria and Italy.
