PROCLAMATION
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH
OCTOBER 2024
WHEREAS, domestic violence is an epidemic affecting Americans in all communities, regardless of age, 
gender, sexual orientation, economic status, race, religion, or educational background;
WHEREAS, domestic violence is a pattern where one partner uses their power to control the other partner 
through physical, sexual, emotional, or financial abuse;
WHEREAS, the Arizona Coalition to End Sexual and Domestic Violence (ACESDV) reports that nearly 1 in 2 
women, 1 in 4 men, and 1 in 2 transgender and non-conforming individuals will experience some form of 
intimate partner violence in their lifetime;
WHEREAS, last year in 2023, 83 people were killed in domestic violence related homicides in Arizona, 87% of 
which occurred in Maricopa County, according to ACESDV;
WHEREAS, enhanced education, prevention, and intervention efforts will increase public awareness and 
confront the abuse of power and control in interpersonal relationships;
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors does hereby proclaim 
October 2024 as DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH and encourages all citizens of Arizona to 
support the efforts of organizations providing education, outreach, and support to victims of domestic violence, 
and calls upon citizens to dedicate themselves to ending all forms of violence and the abuse of power in 
relationships.
