Organization History:

Launched in 2003, First Tee-Phoenix is a youth development organization that enables kids ages 7-18 to
build the strength of character that empowers them through life. Our mission is to positively impact the
lives of Maricopa County youth by providing educational programs that build character, instill life-
enhancing values, and promote healthy choices through the game of golf. Our mission and goals provide
skills invaluable to youth looking for future economic opportunities and advancement.

First Tee-Phoenix operates two core programs:

development through sports and is taught by more than 50 staff and volunteer coaches.
Approximately 1,700 youth members participate each year. Annual membership dues are highly
subsidized by generous sponsors and donors, enabling us to offer yearly membership for a fee of
$155, which includes all programming (except summer camps). Fee waivers are available to
children from low-income families, so finances are never a barrier.

e The OUTREACH program brings First Tee curriculum into schools and after-school settings, where
we train educators to teach our curriculum. Our afterschool programs are at 20 sites, such as
YMCA, Boys & Girls Clubs, and school district afterschool programs. In addition, outreach clinics,
like our partnership with Nike N7, provide an opportunity for us to introduce the game to a large
group of youth at once.

Youth Development through Golf

Provide a brief description of the project being submitted to the 12% SRPMIC Grant program. In the
description provide a summary of the relevant experience, administrative activity, and program
development related to the grant request.

First Tee-Phoenix requests a grant from the 12% SRPMIC Grant Program to support its programming that
teaches youth development through the game of golf to children throughout Maricopa County.

Our kids and teens are facing challenges unseen by previous generations. They live in a world where
social pressures are always on, and perseverance is a required superpower daily. Teaching students
social, emotional, and cognitive skills and providing them with supportive adult relationships can buffer
against the negative effects of stress and anxiety.

With more than 20 years of passionate commitment to our mission, First Tee-Phoenix continues its work
to identify and solve issues unique to Maricopa County that prevent youth from gaining access to the
game of golf and the life skills it teaches. We continually strive to instill a lifelong love of golf in an
inclusive, welcoming, and affordable environment. We are fearlessly dedicated to giving all kids the
chance to learn and grow at home, in the community, and on course.

Our ON COURSE programs consist of eight-week sessions in the fall, winter, and spring, and six summer
school sessions. In addition, 10 competitive and non-competitive tournaments are held to provide

additional opportunities for youth to practice the personal development and golf skills they’ve learned in
different settings. Our OUTREACH programs are held at 20 after-school programs and in 17 school
districts. Staff and teachers are trained by First Tee coaches, who then implement the program
independently.

First Tee-Phoenix youth have reported a greater ability to transfer what they learn at First Tee to contexts
such as school and home (social interaction, managing emotions, resolving conflicts, appreciating
diversity, and getting help from others). Our program effectively promotes positive youth development
through our intentional curriculum, training of coaches to effectively deliver the curriculum, and
supportive and caring relationships with coaches, mentors, and peers.

Funding from SRPMIC would be used to support our programs by investing in training, equipment,
course access fees, recruitment of coaches and volunteers, and producing camps/clinics, tournaments,
and other events for families. Like most organizations post-covid, inflation and other factors have
increased our overall costs. We are committed to keeping our program fees low to maintain an
accessible and inclusive program for all, which is possible with the support of generous community
partners.

In 2023, we are celebrating our 20th anniversary and continuing our work to

First Tee-Phoenix is fortunate to receive support from individuals, foundations, and corporations
throughout the Valley who value our work by supporting us through special-events, corporate
sponsorships, individual contributions, and grant funding. The membership and tournament fees paid by
most participants help contribute to our revenue stream as well. Finally, without our volunteers who

donate their time as coaches, mentors, and in other support positions, we could not impact as many
children as we do.

First Tee-Phoenix has applied for funding from the City of Peoria and Glendale from the Heart, both in
Arizona. Neither has yet been awarded.
